Looing forward to that documentary Rich mentioned. The Sunderland documentary was very, very good. It will also give gooners and unprecedented look behind the scenes of the club. I'm looking forward to it. Hoping it has a happy ending.

Hopefully not like the Sunderland one then.

Didn't know that and had me looking at it.

My most painful Arsenal moment was losing the CL 2nd leg to Chelsea. Don't know why that was the most painful, given other heartbreaking losses. Letting Tottenham come back is probably 2nd.

Oh the pain! That England team was probably superior to the 1966 side and the loss deprived us of what could have been a wonderful final against Brazil. If it is water under the bridge it still runs deep in my memory, though not strong enough to make me perpetually anti-German.

Sad to hear Paul Mariner died yesterday. Not seen it mentioned here.

Perhaps you haven’t noticed it wasn’t a result that made me anti the England national team, if that remark was aimed at me.

Nice. With the signing of Nuno, I've got a little Saturday night (Australian Eastern Standard Time) fever myself.

Better known for his time at Ipswich, but Mariner was a traditional centre forward with a good level of technical ability when he had the ball at his feet.

Who? I’ve heard of Eddie Mercx. But he must’ve been from the seventies. Wasn’t there a famous English cyclist from more recent times. Maybe two. But I’ve forgotten his or their name(s).
EDIT: Apparently his name is spelt Merckx.

Hi Bernard,
Mark Cavendish has equaled Eddy Merckx with 34 stage wins in this year's Tour de France, which was his passion to accomplish. Cavendish had been absent from the Tour de France for 2 years recently. So far has had a good come back.

Awesome recovery from the Epstein-Barr virus. Robbed him of a couple of years. Never thought that he’d return from that. Simply thrilling to watch. Reminiscent of his HTC Colombia/Highroad days. Plus wonderful interviews. No platitudes there.

Absolutely stunning performance to equal Merckx. An all time British sporting great in my book.

Steak and kidney pudding. Quintessentially English but almost completely absent from restaurant menus (sadly).

I make my own.

Respectfully remembered today at Dartford where Ipswich won by the only goal in a pre-season friendly.

He is about to beat Eddie Merckx for number of wins on the daily stage. That is he is a sprinter on the flat stages generally but he is not even in the same league as Merckx for the overall tours. Not saying it isn’t a great effort, just that others who don’t watch much cycling may think he is as good as Merckx.

Any comparisons are meaningless. Merckx is the greatest rider of all time. Cavendish is the greatest sprinter of all time.

I was lucky enough to meet Merckx a few years back. Very happy to autograph my book and despite language issues was nice and unless someone had pointed him out you would never have known how famous he was.

That's correct LTG. I agree Gaz, as an all round rider Merckx is in a league of his own. But for Cavendish to equal his number of stage wins is a monumental feat. Especially since everyone barring himself thought he was finished.

So to avoid sounding nationalistic: great to see that Queenslander Ash Barty won the women’s Wimbledon title. Also great that in a world of over inflated egos she remains basically a nice person.

I suspect we'll see more traffic between Palace and Arsenal, especially with loan deals if not outright sales.

Can't help feeling that Emi Martinez is another we should not have sold. He is doing a good job for Argentina in the Copa. Hope Argentina hang on for the win.

Very professional, very classy touch from Neymar to embrace and congratulate Messi. And then to congratulate the other Argentine players individually. Respect to you, Captain Neymar.

Hope Neymar gets his moment soon. World Cup 2022 perhaps?

Feisty old game. Some battles with club team mates going on. The PSG crowd were at it De Maria for Argentina ,Neymar Marquinhos ThiagoSilva (ex I know)for Brazil
Maybe Gooner 7 you’re right that Neymar was gracious at the end but for such a talent (and I wish he played for AFC) he’s a right wind up merchant
