There’s worse cities to be stuck in to be honest. Dublin is a modern really cool place but when your stuck on your own it’s all out the window

Dublin is good to visit but crazy expensive. I lived there from 1997 to 2002. Watched us win the league in 1998 in a pub in Rathmines with the future Mrs Dec. Great times.

Wow you are right it is super expensive.
Cost me 9 euros for a supermarket sandwich and a coke earlier in between meetings. Booze is dear ish but not from from London prices but food seems really dear.

PSV dropped points in our group and Man U lost so good round for us in Europa. The more pressure on Man U and their manager the better.

Thanks Andy. A few games were canceled for Friday so far.

Understanding there is extensive precedent and protocol in the death of a reigning monarch ….but I have a hunch that this particular woman would’ve wanted the world to go on about its business
I may well be wrong, and frequently am, but I bet she’d have the right hump with the St. Leger being cancelled on Saturday
Anyhow despite not being a big fan of the royal family because of a) their raison d’etre and b) From a distance I don’t like most of them….. I do admire the fortitude and dedicated service of this lady.
More articulate members of the forum can help me here reconcile my grudging admiration for her and her dedication even though the rank and privilege of a monarchy gets on my wick.

Why does everything have to be cancelled to show respect? Isn’t stuff like a minute silence and wearing black armbands more visibly respectful? Sorry but it all seems a bit silly to me.

Most likely there will be news by noon or later today whether or not any PL games will be canceled this weekend.

It’s odd to cancel all entertainment and leisure type activities for the country for the weekend and then go back to work on Monday. With the current hardship many people in the country are going through the weekend and it’s various activities allow a small respite.

Quite right. When Mandela died there was nothing else on TV for weeks, and we had to endure strenuous and competitive public emoting. He would have been turning in his grave. I think same applies for Queen Elizabeth. She was the epitome of dignity and understated, so that should be respected.

Very funny that Man U lost. Maguire and Ronaldo back in the team. Casemiro started, Antony started, and many other first team era. This wasn’t a scratch side or a bunch of kids.

They are massively work in progress and it will take a while for ten Hag to implement his style on the entire squad. Currently their effectiveness seems pretty reliant on Eriksen as the only player with any kind of technique and passing ability who can play in central midfield. He’s not the kind of player you can rely on all season or base a long term plan around.

Games getting cancelled

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/sport ... poned.html

I was hoping to honour the queen by drinking several pints of madri, laughs with mates and enjoying the Arsenal and screaming my lungs out Sunday. That’s gone to the dogs

I do think the country is backwards sometimes

I thought Marquinhos was very impressive, albeit against very modest opposition.

His first touch was typically brazilian, the weight of his passes and the trajectory of his crosses were excellent, his decisionmaking was great and he looked very mature for his age both physically and mentally.

His desire to get up the pitch for the goal was there for all to see and the finish, which was more difficult than it looked, was top drawer.

He's very quick and he worked tirelessly with and without the ball, in attack and defence.

Some people were wanting to see a little more brazilian flair but I thought it was an extremely promising debut and I am sure we will see a few more jinking runs and tricks as he gets used to his surroundings and becomes more confident.

All in all a very promising debut from a kid who was only 19 in April.

I thought Vieira was very promising too. His quality on the ball and ability to play on the half-turn is there for all to see. His vision, weight of pass and range of passing are also top level. Very reminsicent of David Silva or even Jack Wilshere.

Obviously, he's not the biggest or strongest but I reckon, given time, he will prove to be an amazing signing.

Missed the game last night as I’m stranded on Dublin till midday because British airways is no longer the institution it once was (not sure I’ve mentioned that enough)

Managed to catch the United game though. I don’t know if anyone saw it but goodness me it was hysterical. They’ve signed some fat Brazilian for a fortune who just wobbles around the pitch getting run past :laughing7:

Also ronaldo fluffing his lines, getting wound up and then to top it all off a penalty for a non handball.

They are in such a state it’s superb.

Under the reign of Queen Elizabeth II (1952 to 2022), fifteen different individuals have served as the UK’s actual Prime Minister (no interim or acting ones, if there were any, can be counted).

Without googling them first, how many can you name?

Between them Gunfire and DHD have them all. A mistake of Gunfire was that Clement Attlee was before Liz became Queen in 1952. Attlee lost the 1951 election to Churchill.

Attlee was a remarkable man. Quiet and unassuming but an amazing organizer and operator. During the war and in the aftermath, Churchill made the speeches and took all the credit but it was largely Attlee as Deputy Prime Minister who got it all done.

Yes, with a good deal of help from Herbert Morrison and Ernest Bevin, two men who came from poor backgrounds to great offices of state.

On looking through Gunfire’s list of 13 again, as well as Attlee I’ve noticed he made another error. Not only was Bevin never PM he pegged it in 1951, the year before Liz became Queen. So with Gunfire’s 13 less Attlee and Bevin to make 11, and DHD’s 3 (Eden, Douglas-Home and Callaghan), we’re still one short. Any ideas?

If it’s any consolation it’s the one I forgot when I tried it and got 14 out of 15.

Absolutely. I just don't get the whole ridiculous concept of the monarchy but I do find the historical side of it interesting. The Queen was just always there and it simply feels like we've lost a lovely old girl. Seems odd hearing people talking about "the King". Seems an obtuse word for those of us who have only ever know the Queen. As Macca said "Her Majesty is a pretty nice girl".

But, I hate the imposed grief that will be forced upon us along with watching the collective insanity as people try to outdo each other with their takes. I always remember when Diana died, by the end of the week they had run out of any meaningful perspective and one newspaper ran a story of Lionel Blair bowing his head at the cenotaph on Bournemouth promenade pronouncing he couldn't stop crying over the news. Lionel *%^@*** Blair. We're only days away from Gemma Collins take. This country is just totally dysfunctional.

Btw, I only saw the first 35 minutes of the game last night and thought how strong Marquinhos looked. He looks like he has the potential to be a very special player in the way Martinelli is.

Olof Palme? That's it from me.

Watched a decent drama series based on his assassination, starred Robert Gustafsson as the killer. Having a Swedish girlfriend has broadened my scandi viewing habits. Bonusfamiljen was good, Kärlek och anarki (Love and Anarchy) was great fun. Ida Engvoll was fab in the lead. Both on Netflix over here.

Felix did have to deal with the Kreuger crash, though. Like no-one before or since.

Apart from reading a book about Attlee years ago, I learned more about the UK's post-war history from The Crown (Netflix) than from anything else. Excellent series.

I actually got to quite like the Queen from watching it. I'd never had a conscious thought about her before. Seemed she got on very well with Harold Wilson.
