Oxford is a centre of dreaming spires, culture and civilisation. The out-of-town retail park where the Kassam stadium is located is not. 5 miles out, it’s a pain in the arse to get to, pain in the arse to park and pain in the arse to get away from. Oxford my be overflowing with fine dining options but at the Kassam, the offer is bowling alley food. So carpet-burgers then. Fuel.

The recently constructed ground explores the boundary between ‘barely acceptable’ basic and ‘couldn’t-give-a-fuk’. Stand facilities bring a modern meaning to functional. View was ok but of course no video or team info. All in all then, a bit *%^@ so far.

But……it’s THE CUP. I have loved 3rd round day for generations. Never mind the bollocks, it starts with presumption of excellence, and yesterday was no exception.

On the game, I couldn’t see the ‘pen’, didn’t spot who scored the header and I was in the bog for Eddie’s first. His second was offside. Oxford were a decent team. Well organised, competitive and fit. Couple of good players too - RB in particular looked useful. Overall, what a team like that needs is a bit of Cup luck and mercifully, they didn’t get any yesterday.

The ‘no more blood’ kit makes it difficult to identify players. We all know our regulars but without names, Vieira was the lost schoolboy (until his interventions) while Lokonga was the statue, albeit beautifully sculpted. Defence was pretty good but Tommy is not looking great these days. GK was skittish. MF was too static. Saka and Martinelli were ok - but not much more. That all changed with the subs. All credit to Eddie, whose cause I will continue to champion. As I have always said, he is a proper striker - just check his stats. The questions about him should revolve around whether Jesus will get back in.

Great result. Great CUP day.

You paint quite the picture! It’s the hilarious hardships that sort of make it. Contrast that with Roberto Carlos et al stuffed into those weird plush armchairs in Qatar :16surprise:

Yes it's all very concerning. Poor Harry must be very upset, he's tried so hard to avoid publicity and live a normal life and yet they just won't leave him alone.

Assuming city get through against Southampton and the fact they would play the semi finals either side of our fa Cup game with them then we really need them to draw utd in the semi.
Neither of those teams will want to lose face in a semi which invariably helps our cause possibly in the fa Cup game as city will hopefully go full pelt in both games against utd or at the very least be distracted in our fa Cup tie to give us a better chance of progressing.

Been impressed with matt Turner.
After a shaky debut looks very assured and confident.
I wouldn't have any worries with him in the Premier league if Ramsdale got injured.

Absolutely love Zinchenko.
So classy on the ball and love his attitude.
Can't believe city let him go.
I love Tierney too but definitely obvious who arteta favours. Question is how long will Tierney put up with being 2nd choice?

Would we want to sell him though? He might be another Gnabry. Good player, leaves and then takes off. The circumstances are different but by all accounts, Balogun is quality.

Few weird links suggesting we might go for Declan rice in the summer. There seems to a suggestion that he wants to stay in London and while he was a chelsea fan as a kid wants to go to a team in the champions league which looks unlikely right now for them

Least surprising rumour of the day, Arsenal linked to 31 year old Gundogan on a free transfer in the summer

Right now that would actually make sense on a short term deal. Comfortably could assume the xhaka position as back up. Lokonga was so bad the other night, seems crazy he was moaning about lack of minutes on the Amazon documentary when you look out of your depth againest a division 1 Oxford

Just saw a report that Pawson is the ref for the NLD and Tierney on VAR. I don’t know if it is correct.

It would make sense now as a stop gap, but isn't it completely wrong profile for a summer transfer?

Kroenke's other sport properties have mixed results. The LA Rams had a bad season. They only won 5 games so have not made the playoffs. But Denver Nuggets NBA team are leading the western conference so far.

Funny the way the club revealed the new core designs on the ground. Everything has to be a social media event these days

Who was it here who used to moan about the bare concrete on it every week when the ground opened ? :laughing7:

That player seemed to certainly doing his best to get booked! Went through us a few times and had an elbow on Tomiyasu. If he was on the take I bet he couldn’t believe how difficult it was to get a yellow from that ref!

This is correct. We’ve had some ok results with Pawson but he was the ref for the infamous Luiz red card v wolves.
Tierney scares me more.

Fully expecting a spurs penalty at some point - it always happens

Unfortunately they are currently doing their best to avoid that scenario.

A goal with connections, actually Pépé’s second of the night so far.

Nice 3, Montpellier 0. Nicolas Pépé (Nice) left footed shot from the centre of the box to the bottom right corner. Assisted by Aaron Ramsey following a fast break.

Interesting that City rested a few of their best players and their reserves put in a stinker of a performance. This City team can be got at, the first step is mentally removing them from the pedestal that so many teams put them on before a ball is kicked.
I’m looking forward to playing them with our best team. At home we could go with our intensity, pace and the crowd right with us and I think we could surprise them early. I think we have more pace and intensity in our team.

Trouble with being my age is this sort of sad news seems almost a weekly occurrence. Pele, George Cohen, John Bird and now Jeff Beck. All heroes taking the Big Sleep.

Jeff Beck really was a musical one-off - am glad to say I saw him play live, including at The Oval cricket ground over fifty years ago.

Arteta just needs to get the team to watch highlights of last season's match where we dominated them but were most unfortunate to lose.

I would rather they were in the semi's, its 2 extra games (not that it seems to affect them) but those 2 games would have been either side of our cup game against them. I also don't mind City winning the league cup each year - rather them than Man U win it. Lots of teams in the past have used the league cup win mid season to springboard them on to better things.

On the flip side, they were terrible last night, they were poor v everton (drawing 1-1) and also poor in the first half of the league game v Chelsea. They did play well beating chelsea 4-0 in the FA Cup but City are far from their best form right now. Or, to put it another way, how many of City's team are playing well at the moment?

Kalvin Phillips hasn't worked out at City yet, he's had long injuries so needs time but I was never convinced by this signing. It has become quite rare that City make a miss in the transfer market

This is unbelievable.
Arsenal have been charged (again) for failing to control their players in the 34th minute of the FA Cup tie v Oxford. This was for the handball appeal, where is my recollection is correct did see maybe 4-5 players appeal to the ref but were very quickly dispersed to take the corner. No worse an appeal for a penalty than you would see in any game any day of the week. No mention of the clear referee error in failing to award such a blatant penalty.

These charges are going to stack up so they can find some way to deduct us points!

I hope the club go in with a ton of video evidence of other clubs doing exactly what we've done and never once being charged by the FA

This is pretty scandalous now

https://twitter.com/HarounHickman/statu ... 8268668929
this is the video - 4 players run to the ref. that's it. So 4 players around a ref now constitutes a charge - lets see the lack of consistency

It seems to be if a ref makes a terrible mistake, compounded by var (if its available) and the players complain then that will get you an FA charge in order to somehow deflect away from the awful referee and paint the protesting team as the criminals

We also have an investigation in to a yellow card received by an Oxford player with some suspicious betting patterns, highlighted more so because that player was allowed to get away with 3 bookable offences before he actually got one

When maturity doesn't match talent.

Aubameyang; " when I arrived at Chelsea, I thought I would achieve everything I was eager to help my new team win another champions league trophy , in my mind I thought Chelsea was the perfect team for me but when I arrived I found everything is different, I even asked my agent if he can cancel my contract and find another team , the first day of training I arrived early only to find jorginho, kovacic, mount, pulisic and ziyech watching Bruno Fernández videos.

I'll keep an eye out if both Wolves and Forest are charged as they had quite the set to at the end of the penalty shoot out yesterday, lots of players, subs and staff involved - looked very much like failing to control their players to me.

Feels like its time for the George Graham style team talk from the 1990/91 season. "it seems fashionable right now to jump on the bandwagon and get on The Arsenal"
