I have to say I’ve only just watched Southgate’s press conference and that’s *%^@*** hysterical, blokes lying through his teeth.

Honestly Benny has gone up in my estimation. Thing is if Steve Holland tried to mug him off in front of the other players it must have been bad but for him to turn the call up down takes massive minerals. I think that’s proper class. I wonder why they made it public. Probably because it would have been inexplicable to the general public

Fair enough Chaps. You may be correct. I formed a different opinion both on the night and when I saw the replay from which the stills are taken.

There may be other angles that make things clearer.

What? DHD got it wrong, surely not! :14laughter:

He’s also signed his new contract today. The announcement video is his team mates talking about him.
When everyone at Arsenal loves him - and I pressume he was also popular and had no issues at Brighton and on loan at Leeds (Leeds fans loved him, I live here) then the issue appears to be Southgate and his coaching staff rather than Ben White.
Southgate has come out and said White made himself unavailable for selection and he’d be in the squad otherwise, and there is ‘no issue’. If Southgate so desperately wants him in the squad as he says he does then he must find a way to fix things and build bridges. Players simply don’t decide to not represent their country on the eve of a major championship just because they feel like it

Charlie George, Rich?

Have to admit that when Benny pulled out the first time, our family group (multi-generation, mullti- ethnicity) thought it was because there was about to be a tell-all expose in the media. Some thought he was about to be ‘outed’, but we all agreed pretty quickly that would be a MASSIVE positive for him, the Club and for the massed ranks of the support.

Can’t believe Clubs haven’t spotted the potential. It will be HUGE for whoever gets there first.

You are showing your age, being gay is no big deal for most of us. I very much doubt it would be MASSIVE or HUGE.

Looks like us vs Bayern Munich
And not if, but when w go through the winner of PSG vs Barcelona in the semi.

Keeping with recent years I feel if we go to the finals we will play an English side. I'd hate that.

Aren't we home first in each? I'm not a worried about Kane as I used to be. We have our best defense since Sol Campbell..

Did Jurgen Klopp get to choose that CL draw? It couldn't be any better for Liverpool's title challenge.

Potential semi final - Arsenal or Bayern Munich v Real Madrid or Manchester City

I think that is the 4 best teams left in the competition - heavily weighted draw on one side

Bayern fans are banned from the leg at the Emirates for throwing flares in a previous game I think

We'll play the first leg at home in the quarter final - and if we make it to the Semi we'll also play the first leg at home

Bayern
Really thought with the way that the first 2 quarters came out that that would dictate the semi final pathway which meant athletic or dortmund would have been our semi final opponents......that would have been perfect.
Alas not to be
Semi final would be city or Madrid if we get past bayern
At home first in both games if we get through.
Always prefer 2nd leg at home.
Oh well anything from here is a bonus

I'd say PSG will get to the final from the other side. It's a bloody dream draw for Liverpool.

For older forumites

I am reliably informed that on this day in 1969 Swindon turned us over in the League Cup Final

I still remember in horror as Don Rogers sauntered through our defence to finish us off….Brian Moore’s commentary still resonates…”and that is that”

As I recall afterwards Rogers got himself a huge transfer to Palace who laid out 200,000 for him

Indeed Andy. Having been there the year before for the Leeds disaster, me and the old man were pretty confident we could bring home the bacon against 3rd Division ‘no hopers’. That went well. Capped off a miserable decade.

People didn’t bet on football in those days so I’ve no idea what the odds would’ve been but we must’ve been long odds-on.

Have I got that right, Tel?

Hello DHD
We would have been prohibitive favourites probably three to one on ,five to two the draw and 7/2 Swindon

If you recall the pitch was terrible having played host to the annual Horse of the year show three days earlier followed by heavy rain. A flu bug in our camp didn’t help the cause …
Anyhow little did we know then that the glory days of the double were just around the corner!

Back to back league cups? Then 3 straight FA cups from '78 to '80. Also, 2001 to 2003 , 3 straight FA cup finals. Early on as a supporter, I recall someone at the pub in LA saying derisively, Arsenal are only a cup team. But I knew we had the 3rd most titles though. So, I am thinking 'How can that be? We're both'.

In fact looking back from '98 to '05, those 8 years, we were in 5 of the FA cup finals.

Amid the excitement of the draw and the title challenge, no one in the media has discussed this possibility as unlikely as it may seem.

City could achieve back to back trebles as well as something no other club has done in the PL: win 4 in a row.

I recall when Chelsea were dominating, we were the only club in their way 2005, Man Utd were relegated to 3rd best which was new for them. Fergie knew he couldn't win the PL so went after the league cup and won it. He said he went after that cup because the players needed to be reminded of what its like to lift a trophy. You go too long and it becomes easier mentally not to fight for one.

It may be only the Charity Shield but two things about it I think was important. The feeling for this specific squad to lift a trophy and who we beat. I think the CS is directly reported to beating City in the league.

The one advantage either English club in the CL will have if either gets to the final is playing in London. Both clubs know the grounds and its almost a home game. Of course that didn't help Bayern a few years ago when they bent over at home....lol but generally.

Hello all ...

This is always a difficult day for Steves family.

It was 19 years ago today that our founder, Steve Gleiber, lost his battle with cancer.

The only good things about the draw is that we won't have to play City and Real, and it's even worse for City than us. City will have to go to Spurs days after hopefully 120 minutes and penalties against Real.

I was at work when I found out and it shook me. I gasped "Oh my God! He died?" and my coworker asked if a member of my family passed and I said "In a way".

They all knew I was a hard core fan. CL matches were on at noon LA time and everyone, the boss included pretended I only came back from "lunch" an hour instead of 2.

I was constantly on the forum ,everyone saw that green background and knew i was incessantly posting. Private joke around the office at my expense.

So, when they heard it was the namesake of the forum, they all knew the name of the forum, passed, to their credit they understood its gravity to me. They were genuinely sorry on my behalf.

I remember how we completely dominated that game. Sperz were lucky they didn’t get thrashed. I forgot that Henry pushed Poll and told him to f-off. Nowadays he would get a lengthy ban and media vilification until another story came along.
