Behind a paywall so I'll put some chunks........................

“We kicked lumps out of each other,” says Wilson. “I’ve got scars all over my head, two artificial hips, dislocated fingers, broken ribs, torn cartilage, dislocated shoulder, a broken elbow - but the one thing that made me stand out was the ability to dive head first at an attacker’s feet. It was my trademark......................................“What drives me demented is we have one of the best young players and, if we aren’t careful, football will lose him by the time he is 24 or 25 because Bukayo Saka will have been kicked out of the game,” says Wilson.

“Referees don’t seem to see or understand it. There are always a minimum of two players within five yards of Saka and often a third. If they can’t stop him, they kick him.

“People say, ‘What do you mean? That’s too dramatic’. I say there has not been a more kicked player in the Premier League than Bukayo Saka. If he is facing in an attacking position, and he is taking them on, that is the time I worry. I really worry for Bukayo.”

Ferguson had shown similar empathy after Anna died in 1998, midway through Manchester United’s treble-winning season and a period when the rivalry with Arsenal – for whom Wilson was the goalkeeping coach – was at its zenith.

“Three nights after Anna died, the phone rang. ‘Hiya Bob, it’s Alex’. I was, ‘Alex??’ He was, ‘Yeah, Alex Ferguson’. He spoke to me, said, ‘You sound as if you are holding up but where’s Megs?’ He then spoke to her for 20 minutes. I’ll never forget that.”

A typical day in the 1980s and 1990s went something like this: Alarm at 3.20am. In the BBC studio for 4.30am. On air at 6.30am for the first of three sports bulletins that he anchored for many years alongside another great friend in Jill Dando.

It was then away just after 8.30am. Arrive at Arsenal’s training ground for 9.15am. Train the goalkeepers before afternoons spent preparing or interviewing for Football Focus and Grandstand ahead of an evening match either in his capacity as a television presenter or an Arsenal coach.

Quote:
For all this time on television, Wilson was also Arsenal’s goalkeeper coach. His opening gambit when Jennings arrived from Tottenham in 1977 was simply, “Pat, I can’t teach you anything about goalkeeping – I’ve idolised you – but I’m here to help”.

He was the first specialist goalkeeping coach at any club and it would be an entirely voluntary position until Wenger personally insisted that Wilson be paid for his work.

Quote:
“My heroes are two guys I never knew,” he says, pointing. “My brothers Jock and Billy. I was four months old when Jock was shot down and killed in his Spitfire. He was head boy at his school. And I was two when Billy died as rear gunner in his Lancaster.

“My mother was so proud of them. Ultimately Hitler and that regime were booted out, and it was thanks to hundreds of thousands of guys like Jock and Billy. Nineteen-years-old, and they’re lives were over. They will always be my heroes. Whatever I do will never come near what those guys did.”

It really is worth a read if you can.

Yeah. A draw would be a great result obviously but one feels not enough. If we're full strength we should be aiming to win and I'm sure that would be Arteta's mindset.

Let's hope the reported injuries to Gabriel and Saka aren't anything major and Martinelli is back :icon_eek1:

Interesting snippets. Sad that the WWII generation (not just those who fought, but also those who lived though it) is almost gone. We need to cherish those that remain and listen to their memories.

Behind a paywall ...

Easy to defeat their paywall. I just use Firefox on Windows, Install UBlock Origin. Turn off scripts = Paywall vanishes.

They are such losers because they allow Google Bots to roam freely but they block regular 'people' so a script blocker or
"User Agent Switcher" can also defeat these silly paywalls most times.
I don't agree with this tactic as it is lame and biased. It allows Google to view their pages but not a person.
It is just used for clickbaiting people Imo.

Changing the User Agent to Google bot means most will allow you thru also.

I'm extremely nervous about this weekend. Sports gamblers will tell you, its very difficult to beat a very good time 3 straight times. Very low percentage of winning. That's my concern. Counting the Charity Shield, we've beaten City twice and we didn't go their grounds for any of the victories. It's going to be tough obviously but how tough? They are going to play this like a cup final. They must win. A draw isn't good enough for Pep. That's going to be either very bad for us or play into our hands. Can we withstand the onslaught? We have the best defense in the league so there is a good chance we can counter effectively. 1 goal is not going to be enough to win this one away. Home, yes. Away? No unless its a 0-0 game and we score late somehow.

Spurs play Newcastle away on April 13th and don't play again until they play us on April 28th - a 15 day break.
Between those 2 games for Spurs we'll play 4 matches, Villa, Bayern, Wolves, Chelsea - that's a crazy swing in terms of rest and matches even given that we're still in europe and they never were in the first place!
You could argue that if we're winning those games then the momentum of just playing games will suit us better than the 2 week rest Spurs have.....but Spurs will be loving that they have 2 weeks to prepare for us and we'll have 4 days to prepare for them

Its partially why I don't see us winning the title unless the other two crash. First, we don't have the depth for those fixtures every few days. Secondly, those games aren't going to be 5-0 jog around the park. We'll likely be working hard all 90 plus minutes. Two games with that kind of physical and mental pressure and we're too tired to give the same effort for the 3rd.

If we get through it, it may come close to surpassing the runs in '98 and '02 in the spring. Maybe.

Same here for a draw, but of course, obviously prefer a win. Would take a 2-1 result. Goes both ways though for both sides. Hopefully the injuries are nothing debilitating and players are fresh.

Rich you know Spurs fans are lapping up this 15 day break advantage gleefully. Just hope some of our players don't get reinjured, but that's the unfortunate luck of the draw if it happens. Arteta needs to apply rotation obviously. Especially with the Bayern CL match wedged in.

Arsenal have leapt to the front of the queue in the race to sign Martin Zubimendi this summer after the cost of the deal scared off their biggest competitors for the Real Sociedad star’s signature.

Just seen England have a goal chalked off for VAR. It made me wonder, has there been a ‘goal’ Arsenal have conceded this year, that was clearly celebrated and not really disputed but was then cancelled by VAR to give us Arsenal fans that wonderful moment of relief?

Typing this I’ve just realised the biggest one was the Man U goal at The Emirates!

Heard last night that Rice is the first Arsenal player to captain England (from the start of a game) since Tony Adams in 2000

In the Ben White rejecting England story I was reminded listening to a podcast that Paul Scholes also rejected England in 2004, never to play again - but played a further 9 seasons with man U

Like John Barnes before him, Scholes form for the England shirt wasn't the same as his club form.

I have an inkling Brighton will get something out of their travel to Anfield. And that will raise the importance of our game a wee little bit.

I wondered about going to the BM game in Munich but it's just too difficult to arrange things. Looking on the website, the number of away credits you'd need to purchase tickets is now down to 5 and yet there seem to be plenty of seats available in all the away areas.

We got 3,799 tickets but at the moment, it doesn't look as though we're going to sell our allocation. That's really unusual. I suppose the Club could open the sale up to any member regardless of away credits, but I don't think they've ever had to do that for a big game like this.

Sky sports have done a piece where they question the injuries Arsenal players had in the international break, Saka being the main one, and their legitimacy ahead of the City game. No mention of City having 8 players they either withdrew from international games through injury or came of early in games due to injury. Ederson, Dias, Bernardo, stones, Walker, de Bruyne, haaland and Akanji. Let’s see how many of those make the squad for Sunday.

City's first half record against the top 5 this season is scored 4 conceded 1.
City's second half record against the top 5 this season is scored 1 conceded 6.

When we beat City twice this season (albeit one on penalties) we played more conservatively, made sure we didn't give anything to them. On previous occasions we've tried to press them and gone a bit toe to toe and got caught out by either their direct play or a tactical tweak from Pep which Arteta may have tried to over think.

A draw is still a good result as it keeps us in it. The tactic has to be to make this a game is few chances, we really need Martinelli to be fit as I think the longer balls, using Havertz's hold up play and Martinelli's pace will be key. See how much space Man U got on the break in the first half at The Etihad

I have two American friends are Chelsea supporters. I hear Chelsea related stuff as a result. They are looking at a potential massive financial problem as we all know. Some think their American owners won't spend the money to keep them competitive. Meaning challenging for the title. Poch has mixed reviews with them.

I don't know enough but some online pundits and one of supporter friends thinks this all could be the end of Chelsea as a competitive club for titles. Cups are all they will be able to muster. They have to sell, what, 100m worth of players by mid summer?

I recall before Roman took over there were stories they were on the verge of receivership. I for one won't mourn if they implode.

Of the serious injury worries, I think Walker would be the one City would really miss.

But I'm far more concerned with our possible absentees (the reported injuries to Gabriel and Saka, and particularly whether Martinelli is fit--these all seem to be lingering doubts). Any of those would be a massive miss for us.

So I'd be content if City's injuries turn out to be nothing, so long as ours do too!

Pep said in his press conference that both of them were out, so I’d be very surprised if they play. Hopefully, Martinelli will be fit to exploit Walker’s absence.

More likely it would be that Declan Rice has fully recovered from his hard Tuesday night partying arranged by Harry Styles and James Corden. :14laughter:

No doubt Rice will be up for the City match on Sunday.

So, the '74-'75 season. Man Utd were relegated. We were 16th, 4 points from the drop. Tottenham one point from the drop. Chelsea get relegated. Crazy season it appears. I recall a discussion several years ago about how likely we were to getting relegated. Some said some they thought we might and some say they weren't in too much doubt.

What's happened to Newcastle? Prior to the season I thought they were in a good position for 3rd. They are still a tough team to beat, but they have been beaten often this season. It's not an easy win by any means. Next to Liverpool I thought our convincing win over them was a very good statement. Now its not looking as big. West Ham are a decent side but they shouldn't have been down 3-1...at home! Very tough place to get a point last season.

Anyway, I suspect they'll get it right. They 2 big things going for them, a good manager and loads of money.

Poor refereeing for Burnley to be down to 10 men. Shocking.

That's the sort of challenge teams seem to be allowed to do against us, without it even being called a foul.

So, no points dropped for nearly 2 weeks now.

If we can keep this up for the rest of the season we're laughing. :emoticon_mClapp:

" photo of the Police officers as they walk over the fans shoulders to take their position at the back during the 1927 FA Cup final between Cardiff and Arsenal at Wembley. Attendance: 91,206."

I thought I read somewhere that Cardiff was the first non English side to win the cup in this game. Not sure if true but I think I recall reading that.

Actually having an internal debate with myself between watching the 2nd half of Liverpool vs Brighton or the women's FA cup final between the Arsenal women vs Chelsea women. It will depend on the Liverpool scoreline probably. If Liverpool are ahead I'll assume they'll win.

Man U have conceded 106 shots in the last 4 games. That’s crazy. They are so, so lucky to be 6th.

For some reason, Man Utd plays us tough, in good times and bad for them. We have outplayed them and dominated them but I can't recall where we've utterly destroyed them. I'm not counting the league cup win at home early 00s. Ferguson himself said he thought we'd field a weak squad. They've dealt us blows that a casual observer not knowledgeable about the EPL would think we are a relegation side (8-2). They have gotten murdered by Liverpool.

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is we will have an extremely tough time to get a win there. Others outplaying them there doesn't equate to us doing the same.

If we have no injuries, I presume Martinelli for Trossard will be the only change.

If Martinelli is still injured, I would start with Jesus instead of Trossard on the Left. We need the press and transitions to be absolutely spot on today.

All the main players are on the bus apparently.
