Surely the owners of the 12 clubs involved could have envisaged the backlash that their decision would get? I’d be absolutely amazed if they thought it would be welcomed. They probably didn’t care but perhaps didn’t count on such a backlash from the fans of their own clubs?

Looks like it’s collapsing. So what is the plan b for these owners? UEFA have announced some CL reforms for 2024 which had a couple of wildcard entries based on coefficient, which is linked to performance but performance over 5 years so builds in some margin for error of a big club has a particularly bad season and pretty much closes the wildcard route for any team having a single good season

It’s something of a spectacularly easy collapse you have to say.

The clubs have properly mugged themselves off. The Arsenal social media team are scrambling to issue a statement

This should NEVER get off the ground.

Maybe this ESL development has rocked football for one overriding reason - it blatantly confirms, with no pretence, that there is an elite league within the Premiership, not just in terms of affording the best players and winning trophies but also more importantly in attracting paying viewers. We all know this is the reality, and as sweet as it was when Leicester broke the cartel, we also knew that was a rare thing. All the other clubs know this too, and while they may be put out right now, when the inevitable compromise is made they will quite readily resume 'friendly' relations with the six. The gravy train will continue to run - the first class carriages will just be bigger. It is extremely hard to warm to any of the owners of the six, but you can't say they are trying to dupe anybody. They know they have the power and are being straightforward in using it.

If, and it is very unlikely, the six are thrown out of the Premiership, then the other clubs will have a beter chance of winning the competition, albeit with less money in their pockets.

The last seven words of my post.

Here's hoping that if it all collapses in a blaze of awful publicity, Kroenke will have to concede that his dream of a closed shop cash cow supa-league is dead and perhaps he will consider selling? I wonder if they tried to launch this now while there are no fans and embarresing vocal opposition in stadiums?

I realize this is tongue in cheek, but I've seen a lot of similiar sentiments from Arsenal fans the last few days and I don't really understand the thinking. First of all, all the other big clubs from the PL would be in the Super League (unimportant sidenote, but what a horribly unimaginative name that is) so it wouldn't close the gap on any of them, just widen the gap to the rest of the league.

Second of all, plenty of teams have shown you can be competitive without the type of super spending some fans crave; Liverpool, Atletico Madrid and Dortmund have all competed for the big titles recently without spending like Chelsea and City. You need the right manager (and we'll see if Arteta is the right guy) and you need to sign the right players. Same as it has always been really.

Question is, where do we go from here. Kroenke, by being one of the main proponents of the new league, has shown he believes that is the way for Arsenal to become a competitive force again. He clearly does not believe he can do it under the current circumstances, level of income and level of spending.

It's alright for City and Chelsea to take the moral high ground because they have owners with bottomless pockets prepared to spend their money.

Hi Haz,

You could argue that without the need to qualify and with a guaranteed income you could invest more time, patience (and thought) in the rebuilding process.

Even if Arteta is the answer, without significant money to spend he'd have to be a genius, or incredibly lucky (or both) to get us competing at the top end again.

It'll have to happen gradually of course, Liverpool didn't sign all their good players in one summer either. But if Arteta (again for the sake of argument) is the right guy to take us forward, then we will improve if we keep signing players like Tierney, Partey, Martinelli, Gabriel and Pépé, who have all arrived in the last two summers. Think people sometimes makes it sound more complicated than it is really.

Liverpool created the perfect storm. Some brilliantly astute under the radar signings (Mané and Salah), a brilliant youth product coming through (TAA) but crucially the incredible revenue from sales of Countinho for £120m to finance VVD and Allison and also selling fringe players like Brewster for £23.5m.

It would be very hard to replicate that, as Liverpool are finding out now with some signings not working out recently.

I hope we can do it but realistically I see it being an uphill struggle.

Not saying it would be easy or anything, but we don't have to do everything exactly like Liverpool either. At the core though, what they did is basically get in a great manager and make successful signings - most of whom being a level of signings we could definitely afford to do ourselves as our recent spending proves.

Understand what your saying but He won’t get the time Haz, he just won’t.

Our fans don’t understand it’s a process. Klopp lost 12 games and finished 8th in his first season but the Liverpool fans could see a structure was being formed. Arteta has won the fa cup and our lot are advocating his dismissal in his first full season if he doesn’t win a European trophy.

There’s no evidence to suggest transfer budget has ever been withheld. In fact the moment our commercial sponsorship deals improved we started spending bigger and our spend is comparable to other clubs our size

Agreed, 'perfect Storm' is a great way of describing it. For the non super rich it is the only way to win the real top prizes, but to do it again and again is near impossible.
We don't have a golden goose like a Coutinho but we hopefully do have some pieces of the jigsaw in place to set us on the right way.
2 excellent youth team players coming through saving millions in the transfer market - Saka and Smith-Rowe
Some astute cheap purchases for very little money - Martinelli, Mari
Some really top class players where money was committed - Tierney, Partey

Without big sales those are the 3 areas we're working in.
