If Man Utd win both their games in hand, they'll be a point above us. We are in a very good position and obviously need to take all points of teams outside our top 4 challengers.

The one thing that needs repeating to give some context to our goals is that we are a very young side. They are doing very well. I'm reminded of 'Dumbledore's Army' in the Harry Potter series. The have a level of maturity at the moment, that exceeds their years.

Scary stuff.

Yes, it’s hard to admit but spurs seem to give the very best teams a better game than we do. Spurs at home v City have had remarkable success over the last 4-5 seasons. Last night felt like a point for spurs that we probably won’t get in the same fixture. However, they were very fortunate with the Kane red. If the ref does his job Liverpool win that easily I’d say. And Kane is suspended for the next 3

Huge drop off in performance from Liverpool missing 3-4 key players. Matip and Konate both look excellent alongside Van Dijk but as a pair without him they looked all at sea. Then in midfield Keita, Milner and the youngster Hudson were miles off it compared to Fabinho, Thiago and Henderson.
When Liverpool lost their CB last year they moved Fabinho and Henderson back there and they lost control of games in the middle of the park.

I think Liverpool have the best 11 in the league when everyone is fit but City have 6-7 replacements who are at the same level as the first 11. That’s what will probably win them the league again this season

I find him one of the most unlikeable footballers out there. I’m sure a big part is my in built bias to hate anyone who is good and plays for spurs, but I also hate players who are snide, arrogant and believe they are above the rules due to their status.
Let’s not forget his whole ‘I swear on my daughters life’ when claiming he got a non existent touch on a free kick so he could claim the goal rather than his team mate.

On MOTD2 last night even Alan Shearer admitted that England captains are given preferential treatment by referees and match officials. I can’t recall the precise words he used to say it. But Shearer most definitely did say it.

It should also be noted that Liverpool started the game without their leader at the back, and their entire starting midfield missing. At home under the same circumstances, with Liverpool starting a teenage rookie and a 54-year old Milner in midfield, I bet we'd give them a better fight than we have done in recent years.

Hi Darren,

Sorry to hear you've been struck down again. If I recall you got it (or what you assumed was it as there was no testing back then) at the start of the pandemic. Feels like its gone full circle.

I hope that you and your girlfriend make a swift recovery.

How does it compare with the first time around?

Feels like another lockdown is just around the corner. This variant may be more mild (although no definiteive proof of that yet) but it seems to be so contagious and the sheer weight of numbers becoming infected means lots of the elderly and those with underlying health conditions could still end up in hospital.

Not sure what the answer is, these mutations are a nightmare. They say that the natural evolution of these types of virus is to get milder over time but what if it doesn't, what if a new variant emerges which is not only highly contagious but highly virulent as well.

I know Bernard disagrees but I don't see how 60,000 people in a football stadium, in a fairly confined area, can be helpful at this moment in time. People are inevitably coming into contact with infected people inside and outside the stadium, breathing the same air, travelling in cars, on tubes, on buses etc. It must be a good bet for some serious spreading at these type of crowded events.

You are 100 per cent correct soc

In the open air of the ground less risks but you are mandated to wear masks inside the ground unless you are eating or drinking and some don’t anyway. There’s a lot of people packed in small areas unmasked so no way are you not exposing yourself. If you need to queue for the toilet ? People crammed in again many unmasked and a third of Londoners aren’t vaccinated. The ridiculous events that occurred at Wembley in the Italy final are now being suggested that it was a superspreader event because 2000 likely unvaccinated people bunked in. Ultimately it’s a personal choice but if you don’t think it’s drastically increasing your personal exposure you are kidding yourself.

I think behind closed doors games are coming soon

It's not impossible but highly unlikely. Milder variants have a better chance of surviving, since more people who get infected will survive and thus be viable options for re-infection. A variant that causes more severe illness will lead to more deaths, and thus by definition have fewer hosts to infect. The timeframe of all of this is anybody's guess though, but the chance of any new variant decreases with vaccination so we've already lessened the risk somewhat.

Hi TG,

Seems like a no-brainer really.

Anyway, glad you're feeling a little better. Hopefully, you've just got a very mild case. I mean nobody knows if they've even got the Delta or Omicron variants.

Hi Haz,

Fingers crossed.

The trouble is we seem to be learning as we go along, past events are not necessarily predictive of future ones with this virus. Most people probably thought the advent of vaccines would see the end of Covid 19 as a massive global threat, instead we are seeing more contagious variants able to partially or even fully evade current vaccines so its a neverending battle to try to control the virus whilst tweaking vaccines, developing new ones or improving treatment protocols.

I didn't envisage a 2nd Christmas with lock-downs across europe after the success of vaccines, but here we are.

A couple questions.

First, what position(s) should we buy in January? Does it matter if Aubameyang is sold or not?

Second, some 'ifs' but if Saliba is as good as some of us think he is and if he is brought back, would he be a 3rd option or should we got to 3 at the back? And if the latter, how should we line up? Who sits?

My wife tested positive just over a year ago, very mild symptoms that lasted three days, she’s still battling with distorted taste and fatigue. The ongoing symptoms are obviously more acceptable than suffering the fate of the 150k poor souls that didn’t make it, but, it’s a right royal pia that impacts quality of life for who knows how long.

Yeah, surviving isn't the only worry. Its the varying effects of contracting it. There are sometimes after effcs of the vaccine. I had joint issues after the 2nd Pfizer dose, but its preferable to not taking the vaccine.

I have a variety of friends with varying, lingering symptoms as you noted after contracting it.

It does feel like the league has lost some fairness and integrity over the last few weeks. There appears to be no clear rule on when a game can be postponed, certain teams are 'made' to play and others can call games off very close to kick off.
Then those, like Spurs, have effectively had a mini winter break and they play teams who have been playing 3 games a week for 3 weeks.
I know everyone starts the season and finishes the season on the same day so the rest is evened out but it isn't quite as simple as that, particularly in the quick turnaround of games when even half a day extra rest can have a big difference.

Torreira scored and assisted for Fiorentina at the weekend to keep up his impressive form. Guendouzi got a hat trick of assists in Marseille's game.

Whatever we think, its probably clear those two are not part of our future. I think Torreira has an option to buy at about £12m and Guendouzi an obligation at £12m. Add in Mavropanos at a ridiculous obligation of £3m, and if we can persuade Betis (or another) to buy Bellerin, and it would seem like Nelson doesn't have a future at Arsenal. We should be looking at getting somewhere near £45m for those 5 and there would be no detriment to the way the team is performing this season.

Judging by our last transfer window we could make £45m go a long way.

Garth Crooks puts Saka in his BBC team of the week:
Arsenal fans will know what I think of this talent. He's the best thing I've seen since I saw Arsenal's David Rocastle burst onto the scene at Highbury. Saka was brilliant against West Ham and even better against Leeds and the difference between the two teams in both matches. He is the most consistent Arsenal player at the club and has been for the last season and a half - and the reason Arsenal find themselves flying high. I can't understand how such an ordinary team keeps getting these results. It's unbearable.

Not such an impartial, objective analysis from a BBC employee!

It is the right decision due to the pile up of fixtures.

No replays in the cup favours smaller teams in terms of knocking a big team out but not for the money.

Just went back and watched the Leeds game highlights. Incredible the amount of chances Ødegaard orchestrated in the game. Ok, Leeds got nowhere near him but by my count there was at least 6-7 good chances that all stemmed from his play.
Both of Lacazette's chances would have been his assists, Partey's shot would have been his assist, a pass to Saka who shot low and forced a good save from thr GK late in the first half was his assist. Obviously the actual assist to Emile Smith Rowe. And those are just the ones where he is playing the final pass.

When Ødegaard was with us before, I am guessing he saw his loan stint with us as a platform to impress Real Madrid. Show them what he can do. In time it seems he may have done some deep thinking. Saw that he was never going to be in RM's plans at least at the level he wanted and that Arsenal are a big club, he did decently well with us, is wanted, will get plenty of playing time.

Ødegaard is playing like a man who is finally mentally settled in that he's with this club now for the foreseeable future. Maybe he has but I don't think I've seen him kiss or tap the badge yet. Not that its necessary but its something I look for eventually with new players.
