The comms are right about our corners. Their keeper has been excellent in commanding his box, and we should try something else.

A lot of faking by the Porto players.

At our best we are crisp and quickly move the ball forward. But when we are poor, jeez. We might still steal one.

Another BS injury. Trying to get a second yellow for Rice.

Arteta needs to use his bench more progressively.

We didn't fall apart or anything like it. Fella hit an absolute worldie in injury time.

A wake up call.

This game was one where we missed Jesus’ ability to make a nuisance of himself. Trossard and Havertz too lightweight for that.

It was coming and its on Arteta for not doing anything about it. We badly needed fresh legs in the last 10 minutes, something the Porto coach evidently understood. We were just hanging on for the final whistle there :8angers:

We were sitting back and just inviting them to attack.

We saw tonight why we aren't winning the CL or the PL. Too many players with sub-par performances when the pressure is on.

Saliba with a disasterclass.

Martinelli, Trossard whilst having very little service were utter shite.

Martinelli in particular has just not kicked on from last season and must be a candidate for an upgrade in the summer.

Rice was world class and Ødegaard was very good but faded in the latter stages of the game.

It reminded me of the games pre Dubai where we had loads of possession but no cutting edge and always looked likely to concede.

The players looked clueless. Just have a go. Pépé is 41 run at the guy.

First leg away from home with a dodgy ref. In injury time you will be happy to take the 0-0. You can't legislate for a guy scoring a last minute screamer.

I hope some of our injured players are ready, because if Arteta asks the same 9 outfield players who played the full game tonight to put in another full 90 minutes against Newcastle, it might not go well.

Not having that, for me that’s a keeping error.

Check your position Raya. The ball enters the net closer to the bottom corner than the top.

He’s done very well recently by my god he doesn’t like covering his far post.

I’m surprised nobody is saying that. That’s not a screamer

You can only run at him if he is isolated. Porto's shape was very compact. Let's see what happens in the second leg. It will be a different game. We will beat them.

.
Possibly / hopefully Porto will suffer nose bleeds in the rarified air of the Emirates so no need for mass suicides just yet .

In the thirty minutes I did watch I did found our lack of adventure frustrating .

Might have been preferable if that gilt edged chance they missed first half had gone in ; would have given us plenty of time to show our mettle or lack of .

After the heady results of late ; you can be damn sure the detractors are queuing up ; praying we lose to the Geordies next up , so they can shout " bottling it again " from the roof tops

:laughing7: That's the story Johnny Boy ... pick out one player unavailable as the reason for our downfall , if only Tomiyasu .....Partey had been there things would have been so much different .

Fact is from what I can glean we set out our stall for containment take a 0-0 back to the Emirates ...trouble is with that strategy ; say they go 1-0 up next leg
....Ooohh that could be real squeaky bum .

Fine margins ...we hold for 0-0 ... thoughts would be " well it wasn't pretty but a reasonable result " ...now with this last minute calamity " Arteta out " :laughing7:

We basically reverted back to pre Dubai Arsenal. Lets just hope its a one off. No shots on goal with all that possession. We looked better in the 2nd half going forward but weaker in team defense. One got the feeling that if Porto pressed they would score. I didn't think we could hold a 1-0 lead even if we did score. We didn't seem we could counter. They heard about our corners, went to neutralize Ben White and made a big fuss of it to the referee. I wonder why didn't have another player to do what Ben White does in those corners to throw them off or a second tactic if so?

We haven't been in the CL proper in a while and it was really asking a bit much to expect us to get to the semis or finals first time back. Even the invincibles era sides under performed in the CL.

Made very few chances, plenty of possession and started looking for a draw and gave up a late goal. In the Newcastle game we didn’t play with crisp quick movement of the ball. But thanks for putting up that bloody goal: will be with me to the day I die.

Only saw the first 50 odd minutes and thought their game plan nullified the wings pretty effectively, forcing largely ineffective corners (for a change). Their domestic form is pretty solid in defence so no surprise there but is also pretty average in attack so was surprised at how easily they managed to get forward.

A result similar to Lens and I still confident we’ll win at home by more than 1.

Now onto those stripey northern gits.

:1laughter: You've got to get out more Gaz ... why micro focus on something you've got no control over ... So we lost today it hurts a bit but it is not the end of the world ....... latch on to a positive .

For example yesterday did my Op Shop routine and had a load of rubbish books to chuck away at the recyclers .

Get there start biffing the books , I look over and beside the scrap steel bin is one of these but with a longer tank ....... same brand

https://www.spraytech.co.nz/product/contractor-15/

Holy Mackeral ... I'm beside myself ; how the hell am I going to get that home ? Couldn't lift the SOB far too heavy .

Finally manged to stand it on end and get the wheels over the lip of the boot and then pick the other end up and shoe horn most of it into the boot , roped the bootlid and it down to the tow bar .

...got it home . Didn't run initially but shagged around for half an hour and VOILA ...she runs like a dream .

So that ex Tottenham plonker got lucky ; remember Michael Thomas , watch Fever Pitch , dial up v Reading 7 -5 the Invinsibles .

There would still be plenty of critiques if it ended 0-0 and it almost did. Not having a shot on goal even if we ended 0-0 at Porto is criminal. Not after the last 5 games which includes a win over Liverpool.

My fear is we don't have enough gas in the tank for Newcastle. They are going to play defensive, 9 or so behind the ball and using the same players who have not had to fly such a long distance since Dubai. Away flights outside the country are draining to various extents depending on where and how difficult the match is.

You remind me of my ex neighbour: A hot-road he built , did up an old austin, had a couple of other classic cars plus 6 ride on mowers he retrieved from the dump - all running by the end. Ultimately he had to make the big decision = marriage or all the toys. He chose the toys. Great neighbour but moved south a couple of years ago and built a house with storage sheds to hold about 12 cars.

A draw wouldn’t have been a bad result, but now we’ve got a bit of work to do. I think the home crowd will make a difference for us, they will help set the tempo and with us playing fast and being the dominant tee am that will hopefully play in to the refs mind for any persistent fouling and dirty tactics which Porto will undoubtedly employ.

At least away goals is no longer a factor.

On the other hand the prospect of 120 minutes of torture just before Chelsea game is not appealing.

Both the Newcastle and Chelsea games look like massive bananaskins.

I think you may be right TG. He has an increasingly obvious tendency to favour his near post. It's a different style of keeping. Call it positive or front-foot goalkeeping but I think he got caught out of position last night.

He’s so far to his right post that he made their players mind up for him. It wasnt even a strike of any conviction really he just guided it in the direction of the far post.

It’s a boring debate and I’m not advocating dropping Raya but no way would Ramsdale have let that in.
