What a gritty and satisfying win.

Gabriel rightly MOM with his goal and brilliant defending, but Raya brilliant again. He has been immense this season.

:22encouragement:

That feels very pivotal. Spurs seem like a boxer whose main tactic is to bum rush their opponents. If you stay calm and exploit that space in behind or the awful keeper on set pieces there’s a clear way to beat them. How do you beat us? It isn’t obvious.

Yes, he was a bit skittish in the first half but that second half was flawless.

Spurs fans cannoned that the goal stood. A two handed push on the back by Gabriel. They have a point. That said their tactic was to swing in balls and they could be doing it till next Sunday and I wouldn't see them scoring. They have too many players who are not of the standard necessary. Their goalie is also dodgy.

How do you beat us?
Con the referee into giving us red cards

The "push" was nothing and Romero had time to recover.

The Spurs player knew that. Of course the fans are going to try to make a grievance out of it.

That is a seriously good win and such a mature performance.
Gary Neville called it spot on in his commentary, Arsenal may not have won a title but we play like title winners, mature, never panicked, and score the goals and win the points even when not at our fluent best and at the toughest of away games. Our away record in the last 2 years is beyond almost any team in prem history.

The system Arteta has built shows everyone knows their job and players can come in and out and be effective.

The work rate and discipline off the ball is unreal. I saw Saka cover an 80 yard Udogie run in the second half. Saka covers White better than any right winger to their full back in the league - and he delivers match winning contributions at the other end.

Timber just has something about him - he’s a warrior like Gabriel. Saliba and White are the calmer but it works.

After we scored yes spurs had the ball and territory but it was all fart and no poo, we kept them beyond arms length. They had no answer

I think if the ‘push’ was in the action of jumping for the header then it’s much more likely to get given.

If you want a letter of the law argument then you can defend a foul being given, but if you call that kind of contact as a foul in the box in every game then you’ll have 5-6 penalties a game

If you listen to the podcast called Handbrake off (I recommend it) then Amy Lawrence who is often on that would call that a “F**k off win”

I have seen goals disallowed for the same thing. Mind you the half time cuppa probably cooled the ref down and he decided not to be so card happy. Timber seriously looks like a chap you would not want to fight.

Maddison absolutely ghosting in a big game yet again. Don’t understand the hype he gets.

Few good crosses that get nodded in, a long range goal….then he goes quiet for 6 months

Not wrong about Timber.

The ref was notably less fussy in the second half. The valium in the tea worked well. He let at least a couple of our 'delaying actions' on their free kicks go (Havertz, Nwaneri). I'm glad he did but it is just so inconsistent.

I saw some rival fans before the game already looking at us being 8 points back from City at the end of next weekend. I didn’t buy in to that being a must win game today, that’s crazy so early and for such a difficult game.

Villa away and spurs away beaten to nil. Brighton at home is not an easy game. We’ve had a much tougher start than City.

Those two wins are huge. I generally don’t waste energy getting annoyed when City win a game - however when they go away to spurs and Villa I’ll definitely be putting some energy in to half expecting them to drop points

Was thinking the same. I don't get the hype. Mind you he has had his injuries.

Postecoglu win rate 48%, Conte win rate that got him sacked….53%.
Didn’t get champions league, can’t defend set pieces, leaves his side way too high up the pitch with kamikaze tactics, refuses to change his tactics for any team, spent £400m, employs a gk who is de gea-esque in sticking to his line. Bravo Ange

Nwaneri looked the calmest of our 3 subs with the ball. Jesus worked hard and it was good he went to RW and told Nwaneri to stay up the pitch - taking responsibility for the defensive work but both Jesus and Sterling dribbled in to a sea of bodies when we just needed to retain possession.

Probably needs to be some rotation for the CL game v Atalanta as the players gave everything out there and we have to go again in Italy on Thursday then again at City on Sunday. Quite why we have to play CL away on a Thursday when City play at home on a Wednesday is beyond me. I’d start Nwaneri in that CL game now.

Desperately need Ødegaard and Merino back but I think we might have to wait until after the next international break.

We won't get away with a midfield performance like that against City. Even with Rice back. We need to find a better plan that Jorginho and Partey playing together.

The xG of Tottenham’s six shots after Arsenal opened the scoring:

0.01
0.04
0.04
0.02
0.02
0.04

Free we took the lead I didn’t ever feel like we were going to concede.

This team so rarely, really rarely drops points late in games. I think the last time we gave up a lead late in a game was the 2-2 at Anfield in 22/23 season

Don’t know if this is common knowledge but it was Arteta who bought Jover to City….then on to us. So not something he nicked from Pep, Jover and the importance of set pieces is all Arteta.

Amazing how with the right people and attitude you can go from pretty much the worst to the best team in the league on set pieces. Other clubs must all be looking on saying why can’t we do that?

Both Mike Dean and Maek Clattenburg when discussing the NLD at half time discussed the need for a higher bar for a 2nd yellow card.

This weekends games had a prem high record of 65 yellow cards. For me this is the PGMOL closing ranks after the Rice high profile decision, so they can try to issue a lot of yellows this weekend for delaying the restart (obviously missing loads as well), so that it in some way protects or validates the Rice yellow.

It’ll all revert back to the normal way refs ref games soon enough as is the way every season with some rule

Timber is a serious left back, to think this guy also plays RB and CB. He improved us a lot. And Calafiori to add in to the mix.

It’s a long way away yet but I’m hoping we can get a shot in the arm type signing in January to give us an extra push in the title race I really hope we’re still involved with at that point.

I’m still waiting for Martinelli to recapture his form. That would be a huge boost, bigger any signing we could make in Jan imo. Merino picking up the slack in midfield would be very welcome also.

Beware the freeze frames to make it look like Timber went over the ball with his studs down Porro’s shin….anything can be made to look very different on a freeze frame, look at this one for example. Timber in total control of the ball and it looks like Porro is the one going in with a wild tackle…..

Arsenal player clearly trying to get the ball to take a quick free kick. Porto deliberately kicks the ball away to stop the counter attack Arsenal had on…..it’s almost like the ref managed the situation and doesn’t ’have no choice’ in these kinds of situations.

Can we get more of Tim Cahill on our screens. Quite how he remains so professional with the ridiculous Key’s angle of questioning.

He is an intelligent ex footballer. He was also Arteta’s best man at his wedding I believe.

I knew they were old team mates but didn’t realise they were best mates.

Irrespective, Cahill was the one talking about Arsenal’s process 4 years ago whilst being scoffed at by Roy Keane.

Why does TV struggle to get pundits like this on. Fabregas was another, you see him at major tournaments (I know he’s managing Como) far too many say what you see pundits.

Saw a really good point on how good we are defensively. People often talk about how great teams can turn defence in to attack so quickly - Klopp’s Liverpool were very good at this - but for us it’s how quick we can turn attack in to defence.

I think we have two versions, 1 when we’re totally dominant we push high and win the ball high, but the 2nd on display today is when we play better teams who are good on transitions and commit men forward is every single player sprints back, so it’s not necessarily about hunting the ball down quickly it’s about getting bodies back to defend the box.

Seeing the team continue to do this shows the hunger and desire is still right at its peak despite the dejection on two 2nd place finishes

Need to manage some legs for Atalanta ahead of City away. It is tough how the fixtures have fallen because ideally you'd want a nice gimee home game for your opening CL game, not away to the Europa League winners on a thursday night.

Rice can and likely will play 90 minutes in both games. I'd rest whichever of Partey or Jorginho you want to play at City, probably resting Partey. The back 4 can probably cope with the game time but I'd definitely be tempted to give Timber a rest to not overload him after his long injury. If Saka has a slight knock then don't take any risks, it seems an ideal chance to give him a break. Jesus could also do with some minutes.

Raya, White, Saliba, Gabriel, (not Timber), Jorginho, Rice, Nwaneri, Martinelli, Jesus, Sterling
