I don’t know how Arteta will view the Calafiori and MLS situation for Brugge. Calafiori can’t play v wolves so you might play him to protect MLS but also MLS needs some match time to be ready for Wolves as he’s looked very rusty recently

If it was me I’d start MLS and make a pre planned sub at 60

Given Calafiori's past injury problems I'd give him the 2 games off.

Important not to lose perspective- that game could easily have gone either way or ended as a draw. Saka’s shot here is going in but blocked by a late boot by the defender, Ødegaard had one tipped over and we created many more chances. Villa had their chances too and Raya made a couple of good saves. It was a knife edge game where the ball ran nicely for Villa for both of their goals.

City almost threw away a 5-1 lead v Fulham and would have drawn if not for a goal line clearance. City beat Leeds in injury time with a shot very very similar to this one from Saka that found its way through the bodies instead of being blocked.
The late equaliser v Sunderland wasn’t going in but for it deflecting and ballooning in off Gabriel’s head

We’ll face many more games like that this season. We need to make sure as many games as possible aren’t decided by fine margins and when they are that we ensure we’re on the right side

We’ve fallen behind v Liverpool, city, Newcastle, Chelsea and Villa we pegged 4 of those teams back, drawing 2 winning 1 and losing 1. But the first goal is so often crucial in this big games we have to stop giving it away

At 12 seconds highlights a problem with our attack on transitions. Ødegaard actually carried the ball really well from deep but who is actually helping him, there is no intensity, no penetrating off the ball runs. We need to start putting as much in to transitions in attack as we do when we are running back to stop a counter attack

Yeah. I think that is where Martinelli is very good at making clever runs. Gyorkeres presumably too. It's not really Eze or Merino's game. It was also good to see Ødegaard taking more shots and the radar seemingly improving.

On the other hand, after the save (at 28 seconds), Ødegaard just has to show more urgency, and hit it first time, either towards Merino (who is very well placed) or at goal. He does that too often.

Agree - it's why the wide left position is our Achilles heel - I reckon Martinelli could easily be no9 and reason he never gets deployed there is out lack of left sided width

We really could do with a left sided Saka! We are too dependent on our right side attacking wise

If Trossard is injured, I'd give Martinelli a good run of games to see if he can pick up form. Arteta seems to have labelled him as a supersub and I don't think that does him any good. He's not a natural winger (and neither is Trossard) but he's one of our best players on transition and in making runs into the box.

It was the same with Trossard. When he was being used as a bit part player he struggled.

How are those 115 charges coming along against City by the way?

There is no doubt in my mind that a huge percentage of ‘neutral’ fans will be cheering on City to win the title. There is no rivalry with City, nothing that really means anything. And no one has a City fan in their friendship group and City fans are basically non existent, so everyone’s lives are made more bearable if City win it. The majority of pundits will be the same.
It’s always amazing how so many people in football can casually seeep aside the rampant cheating of both City and Chelsea and activity cheer them on to win the big trophies.

So many small details. 30 seconds to go and Hincapie has plenty of time to clear this up the pitch, but a bit of a reluctance to use his right foot and he takes a heavy touch to give Villa a throw in a dangerous area, the pressure stays down our end and they score.

If you can’t win it make sure you don’t lose it. But for that goal we’d be so much more positive today. A point coming from behind and ticking off another tough away day would have been ok, even with City winning an easy home game.

We weren’t outplayed, we weren’t outfought it was a very even game. Take Villa’s 3 CB and 3 strikers out and give us a fully fit team and there would be a big difference

Here’s another fine margin. Relatively simple pass on his strong foot for Merino to put Saka clean through on goal - way overhit

Utter and total BS. If it is us or City the vast majority will back us because although Man City have a huge fan base they are where they are through financial doping. I've met manure supporters, die hards who'd rather Liverpool win the title than City.

Back in November the decision was allegedly to be announced before Christmas. The length of time it is taking tells me they will get a slap on the wrist.

Unless we improve at centre forward, we are going to have many games which are in the balance right up to the final whistle. Still early days, but Gyökeres is a worry. In my view Havertz isn't good enough to be the striker for a top side. He is a very good player but not a natural striker at all, yet still seems to be a better option than Gyökeres when fit. Jesus barely counts due to his terrible injury record.

Or it will just rumble on for years with no decision.

Simply not true. Die hard fans will rather City win as you can write it off as cheating. I always wanted City to beat Liverpool to the title because a team like Liverpool winning highlights your own teams failures so much more and you will get constant abuse from the fans of those teams.
Man U fans I can sort of understand due to their rivalry with City but I’d wager most fans of the other top clubs would much rather City win it

There is an intermittent error on the forum I have noticed. It is a database error due to the size of the forum postings.

I'll try and sort it later today.
*It's nearly 3 am here now.

If anyone gets an error message, just try refreshing the page.

I have adjusted the MySQL tables to allow a much larger number of topic views (up to ~18 quintillion now).

I ran a command over all the tables so this error shouldn't happen again for any of the tables.
The forum software is quite old and will need upgrading one day but this should be a decent band aid for now. ;-)

I'll monitor it for any errors. If anyone sees anything errorwise, if you could let me know - Ta.

Rog ...
Edit - Yeah, couldn't sleep - and I don't like error messages.

I think us and City have only played 5 identical fixtures so far
Leeds at home we both won
Fulham away we both won
Villa away we both lost
Spurs at home we won they lost
Newcastle away we won they lost

Looking through the rest of City’s wins there are 3 that stand out that we’d do well to match
Beating Liverpool at home, Man U at home and Brentford away

City will stumble in tough games as well, especially if they pick up some knocks. Pep is using the same core 12-13 outfield playets at the moment.
Nunes, Dias, Gvardiol, O’Reilly, Gonzalez, Foden, silva, reminders/cherki, Doku, haaland.
He’s not rotating them. I’m hoping their legs start to feel it and they pick up some injuries as we deserve to have them go through what we’ve been through

People are connecting the dots and coming up with Muñoz who has started every game for Palace until their game today v Fulham.

Some pretty poor decisions against Saka v Villa. The small corners and throws the wrong way can really stifle momentum and territory. Those weren’t hard to give really either.

Officials attempted to make the handball rule easier for them by saying any goal scored after it hits the attackers hand/arm is ruled out no matter how minuscule the touch is or whether it’s deliberate

So we have a situation in the Brighton game where Ritter has a very debatable handball to control the ball before shooting, gk saves it and then he scores from the rebound. If the gk had let the initial shot in it would have been ruled out, so he’s punished for saving it

Could there be an argument that the back 4 at the weekend if White, Timber, Hincapie, Calafiori may have been better suited to be Timber, White, Calafiori, Hincapie?

Once Eze was picked wide left I think Hincapie as a natural overlapping full back suits him better. Villa packed the centre of the pitch with Rodgers and Mginn drifting in more than a natural winger does. So Eze drifting inside from the left with Hincapie holding the width may have helped.

Without Gyökeres or Trossard or Martinelli we had no one to stretch the defence with runs behind.

This isn't a great City team at all and doesn't have great depth. They do have a great manager.

Saw the same spaces open up for Eze and he didn’t even bother taking it forward. Attacking with numbers at pace just isn’t our game it seems unless it’s Martinelli making a run.

Congratulations to Lando Norris, F1 World Champion !!!!!!! :58big-emoticons: :53big-emoticons:

Glad Verstappen didn't win it. Still gutted on how he and the FIA stewards cheated Hamilton of his championship many seasons back.

Squad depth is as much of a factor as who we have and haven't played. City have tended to go on long winning runs in the new year which is when the advantage of having a good squad comes to the fore, and the smaller teams that have caused upsets (like Sunderland this year) tend to fall away.

Hopefully the difference this season is that we are at least a match for them in that department. We need just a little bit more luck with injuries!

Thank you
A.

Fully agree. I hope the rebellious MySQL tables yield to Rog's command.

I propose adding another 0 to his salary.

Thanks Rog.

The wages all go into a numbered Swiss bank account.

I doubt the solution (with the current squad) is going to be one player scoring lots of goals. Maybe Gyökeres will click but I am not banking on that. So what we need is an attacking unit with multiple goal threats (Saka, Martinelli/Trossard, and hopefully Eze/Ødegaard) as well as goals from set pieces, Rice, etc. This is pretty much what we are doing, and (with reasonable luck with injuries) I think we have the resource to do it a lot better.

People are connecting the dots and coming up with Muñoz who has started every game for Palace until their game today v Fulham.

The official reason is a 'minor knee injury'. Of course there are many ways you can injure a knee ...

Saw the same spaces open up for Eze and he didn’t even bother taking it forward. Attacking with numbers at pace just isn’t our game it seems unless it’s Martinelli making a run.

The game turned in to a basketball match, you attack, we attack. I can say for certain Arteta would have hated it. We didn’t keep possession of the football and didn’t close the passing lanes. Think how hard it’s been for teams to even get a shot at our goal in the last 4 months, Villa cut through us far too easily. Gabriel and Saliba missing is a big factor, huge in how they are aggressive and organise the defence, but the players looked fatigued. We’ve had injuries which doesn’t help the rotation but Arteta has undersided some players as well
Nørgaard, 31, former premier league captain - surely he would have helped in those final 20 minutes v Villa. If not then, then when? We can’t have 3-4 players in the team who are only going to play dead rubbers, league cup ties and early round FA Cup

It will be interesting to see Liverpool fans’ responses to the Salah situation in comparison to their response to Trent.

The Salah situation is another tick in the box for those of us who think Slot was just incredibly lucky last season. Slot wasn’t one of the top 3 factors for Liverpool winning the league.
