This remains my go to website, and always will. What a legacy SG left us. Thoughts with his family, and can i add my thanks to the folks who continue to keep it going. Whatever our differences we all have one thing in common. We love The Arsenal.

I still don't think we're seeing the best of Partey yet. He is influencing games but has also been a bit sloppy in recent games - the sorts of things that if it were Xhaka would be jumped on immediately by the fans. In the last 15 minutes v Spurs he was as culpable as anyone for us losing control. I recall a silly foul on Kane that lead to Kane hitting the post and also a sloppy pass that went out for a corner.
His performance against Man U away is the level we need him at because if he gets there consistently then he really is a game-changer for us

Hi Rich,

He's goes from the sublime to the ridiculous.

Moments of absolute brilliance and powerful dominance mixed in with moments of carelessness, errant passes and failure to track runners.

Agreed, (but no the captian thing just yet), Tierney has so many things that are likeable about his game. That trick he has where he looks like he'c coming inside and instantly knocks it down the line (as he did to Doherty) is so effective. He shows a good turn of pace as well - and crucially he so often picks out the right final ball. We were used to these fine accurate curling crosses from wider positions when he first came but now his more potent weapon seems to be these low crosses behind the retreating defence to an oncoming midfielder.
My only concern is when he's come up against the very best he has been beaten a few times - as most defenders are - but I think it was against Mahrez and Salah who both turned him inside out a bit. Generally he's good 1 v 1 but those guys are in a different level. So if he wants to be up on a level with Ashley Cole as great Arsenal left-backs that is the one area for improvement for me.

Yes, he does need to work on his one v ones against the top players but his capacity to get up and down the pitch is incredible and his desire to make things happen and refusal to accept defeat is fantastic. I feel he has stepped up a level in recent weeks.

Morning socrates. Surely that will depend on whether Aubameyang leaves or stays. If he does go, then someone else will be given the captaincy with Tierney being a candidate. If he doesn’t, how wise is it to publicly strip him of the captaincy, on top of him being dropped from the team against Tottenham because he was late getting somewhere for the game?

Do we want to really urinate off (the forum will block a use of a four letter word beginning with a ‘p’, followed by an ‘i’, and ending with double ‘s’) our main goal scorer? My guess is Aubameyang would take it as a public humiliation. I know Xhaka showed a great attitude to come back from it, but would Aubameyang? Maybe, but it’s surely debatable.

Hi Bernard,

You are right, of course, it would be difficult to strip Aubameyang of the captaincy.

If feels like Tierney is a leader without the armband anyway.

https://www.football365.com/news/aubame ... mediawatch

Just read the first part of this. I don't know what axe Stan Collymore has to grind with Arsenal but he clearly has a problem with us that he won't let go, and he really isn't the only one in the media. Click on some of the links to historic Collymore ramblings over Arsenal. The standard or some of the football punditry is appalling, far too many have an agenda they want to talk or write about and shoehorn that in irrespective of what actually happened or everyone could see with their own eyes.
I would have far more respect for pundits who give their opinion and then come back and revise it and say 'they've proved me wrong' and this is how they've done it. Explain why you had a certain opinion back then and why you've changed your mind now. Arsenal would be an absolute prime example. To just say 'Arsenal are 10th and therefore mediocre' is adding little in the role of the pundit. Tell us why that early season form meant we not only had poor results but also didn't even look capable of picking up a result. Now tell us how that has been fixed by Arteta and has us 3rd/4th in the form table since Christmas.

I don't mind pundits sticking the boot in where it is warranted but don't fall back on tired old Arsenal-based cliches when they are not only not true but there has been clear evidence to the contrary.

Hi Warrior,

Such a shame Steve was taken so young. He was such a visionary, setting up this forum etc. Who knows what direction his life might have taken and what he might have achieved through the internet revolution and all its possibilities, as fans presence online, social media and video blogs have evolved over the years. Whatever he did I am sure it would have been amazing.

RIP Steve.

Foden is an incredible player. Pep took a lot of stick for not playing him enough but seems to have managed him very well, obviously a lot easier when you have so many talented players worth millions in the squad.

England have to find a place for him in their starting 11 at the Euros.

There is a very good line of English youngsters coming through, not so many in central defence at top quality but young players like Saka, Emile Smith Rowe, Foden, Mount, Rice, Greenwood, Sancho are all excellent and England could be a threat at the Euros.

Although look at the talent in the French squad it is amazing. Even Portugal look like they have some starting 11 they could put out even just from premier league based players

There's also Jude Bellingham at Dortmund, he has started 12 games in the Bundesliga and six in the Champions League as a 17-year old. Quite an incredible feat.

Portugal really looks to have an amazing team on paper. Not sure you'll find a better back four than Cancelo, Pépé, Dias and Guerreiro in the Euros. They have a number of good midfielders and offense with Ronaldo, Fernandes, Jota, Bernardo Silva and Joao Felix among others.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, it really seems like the perfect opportunity to rest a few key players. Despite Arteta's pre-game comments we should really be able to see the tie out with our second eleven although I doubt we'll rotate that much. Xhaka has played 15 straight 90 minute games, Saka and Smith-Rowe have also played a lot and carried little niggles. Would be a nice bonus to see Martinelli start, but the only one I'd be really disappointed to not see is Pépé. He has hit another level of consistency lately, showing he can have a consistent impact on games both when starting and when coming on as a sub and that should be rewarded.

very true, Grealish is top quality, if he's playing as well as he did for Villa before his injury he'd start for England for me. I only didn't include him because he's 25 so no longer a baby like the others in my list.
England have lost some talent as well, Musah who was with us and now at Valencia has declared for USA and Musiala at Bayern has declared for Germany - I'm not sure how much connection they have to England but they were both eligible.
England also have Jude Bellingham coming through who looks a talent at only 17 or 18 and we have talented right-backs coming out of our ears!

Xhaka with 15 straight starts, the guy is a machine. In fact when has he ever been injured? Perhaps plodding around half pace and passing the ball sideways has its benefits after all (joke)
I think seeing Martinelli start is too hopeful, but I hope he at least gets a good 30 minutes or more especially if we can effectively seal the tie in the first half. Pépé is a must start, Willian will probably start as well - makes sense if Saka is carrying a knock.
You could probably rotate in Holding and Mari and not lose too much quality in defence. Id start Tierney with a view to bringing him off when we're comfortable.
Partey is a difficult one, you want to protect him but he also needs to build up his match fitness.

Almost posted a few weeks ago when Shrewsbury game mentioned from GG years. Went to that game and sat next to Nigel Winterburn’s parents. They were so nice and even shared their home made fruit cake with me and mate. They told us that Nige wasn’t that passionate bout football as a kid - funny how that turned out! What a player.

Always wondered which current player’s parents would do the same.

Chelsea cruise past Atletico Madrid 3-0 on aggregate. But that doesn’t tell the whole storey, at 0-0 in tonight’s game and 1-0 to chelsea on aggregate azpilicueta under hit a back pass and reached out to pull back the Athletico striker who went down. On another night with another ref that would have been a penalty and red card, if the penalty is scored is 1-1 on aggregate and Chelsea defending for 60 mins with 10 men knowing 1 more goal conceded means they need to score 2 to go through! Such fine margins in knock out games

Bayern has won their share CLs or the old European cup. City hasn't. Only a cup winners cup in the 60s according to wikipedia.

I mentioned it to say they will likely be another English club winning a CL before we have won one. :1cry:

I really wanted us to be the first London club to win it but alas, its not to be. Same as not being the first London club to win the double.

I wonder aloud if I'll live to see us win the CL? I'm starting to fee like how Boston Red Sox fans were if you know the story. But at least they had won a world series before.

I definitely think we could have won it in 2004. I recall in the first leg against Chelsea in the CL. We equalized and were seemed satisfied with an away goal. The kind of season we were having and the fact we were beating Chelsea routinely, I can see why, but I recall saying to myself that we should just put the tie away and press for a 2nd goal. The 2nd half was the worst feeling I've had as an Arsenal fan and I've had plenty. It was the easiest CL to win in ages. All the 'big boys' were knocked out.
