Really good half to see. I said after the second goal the most pleasing part is there is an obvious game plan and tactic of shape and how to move the ball and create the space. The players need to put it in to action but it’s so nice to see a gameplan that our opponents struggle to work out how to stop.
Xhaka in as a left centre back, Saka pushed very high, Harry Wilson on bmouth’s right isn’t the best defensively and hasn’t got a clue of whether to press Xhaka and get passed around easily or sit off him and let him dictate the game.
Some plays straight out of the Pep playbook, overload one side of the pitch, usually the right, ensure the left winger (saka) stays as high and wide as possible and then switch the ball to him once you’ve sucked in enough of their players. Both goals came that way

well that would be the first time since George Graham was manager that anyone thought like this about games at the club.

Down to 3 in that position

Martinez flapping at a corner and getting nowhere near - should have been a goal. He's looked a bit dodgy tonight.

Saka has been my man of the match so far.

Having a player at left back who is so good on the ball is such an advantage. He’s been outstanding since he’s been covering and could pose problems.

Sokratis with another towering header from a corner, gets totally clattered after, and no foul from the ref. He only stops the game as both players down with head injuries.

A minute ago he gave us one of those uncontested drop balls as we were in possession when the game was stopped but dropped it for us on the edge of our own box and allowed Bournemouth to have two players 5 yards away to press as soon as the ball was dropped so all we could do is give it an almighty hump back to them. Not really the spirit of an uncontested drop ball

Shocking defending. Totally bog standard and as bad as anything Mustafi would do

Guendouzi has been good though.

Got there in the end.

Bossed the first half, though Bournemouth never really turned up until the second.

Saka and Guendouzi excellent.

We are still very suspect when teams do manage to get at us, thankfully Bournemouth rarely did until the latter stages.

Post subject:  Re: Supporters Forum

Sokratis excellent at the back
Guendouzi fantastic in midfield, barely missed a pass, was a pest for them and had the crowd booing him like every good CM should do away from home
Saka brilliant, to think he’s barely played much first team football at all let alone any at left back.

We’ll get stronger tests, especially teams who don’t sit of us like Bournemouth did first half but that first half performance must please Arteta a lot

Hi Rich,

Saka could genuinely be the new Ashley Cole. So much of the modern game is about the attacking prowess of fullbacks and he looks like he can attack and defend.

I don't think Guendouzi has had a great last few months but every now and then you see a performance like that and it reminds you what a talent he is.

I have a concern Holding isn’t the player he was before his injury. Prior he was always a progressive and mobile defender who would use his mobility to dig in try and Nick the ball ahead of the attacker. Think of how he did Mertesackers running for him in the chelsea cup final. Fast and reactive.

Now he seems almost completely immobile. He just seems to not want to move at all. When he went to chase down a ball near the corner flag he looked so tired and laboured. Just seems not to want to run or move at all and isn’t reacting because of it. I think he looks shot to pieces and fear he won’t be the same. Might need a loan to test it.

Really sad. Reckon he might be better off chugging along in training and having the odd 10 minutes here and there. Would take a long time to trust the knee and get that sharpness of turn and acceleration back. He’s a big lad. Until you’re up to speed it can feel like you’re dream running in during competitive games. Just use the rest of the season to rehabilitate and then Arteta can assess him com pre-season.

I think that's one of the problems we've had since Kos/Mert - we've had centre halves but we've never had a proper pairing.

I've always thought that a decent #5 next to a decent #6 defend far better than two outstanding #5s or 6s who don't compliment each other.

Willie Young is a great example. A Sokratis type who whilst not blessed with a great amount of skill was hard as nails and had O'Leary to do his running for him. They complimented each other and that added up to more than the sum of the parts.

Joking aside there were two different games played out there and MoM for the first half was Willock by a country mile but having talked about his limitations recently I was really happy that Gwen was my MoM for the second half.

At the pub tonight I got asked which name I'd have on a shirt. I've never been into that because apart from anything else it costs more and most matches you've got a jacket on anyway but I got pressed. Thought about it and it had to be Sokratis. Not the best, not what I'd aspire to be in my winning the Cup Final for the Arsenal dreams. No, but he's the guy who can't give less than 100% if he tried and with that face you could take him down the casino after the game to play some poker.

Xhaka. Again.

Got to be said right now the way he slips between a midfield two without the ball and a back three with it is vital to our game.

Although I’ve been to Bournemouth before for weekend breaks, that was my first away game there so another to add to the list. I was only able to get a ticket because of the increased allocation for cup games. I can’t for league games.

Hope Mustafi’s injury isn’t too bad as he had such a good game. Saka was also excellent but Guendouzi gets my man of the match. From the kick off to the end he barely put a foot wrong and in effect ran the game. Xhaka and Willock are worth a mention, and Belllerin. Shame Bournemouth got a late consolation but no real harm done. Hope they go down with such a small ground, and I fully expect them to.

It won’t happen but I’ve seen some suggest he could be a wildcard for the England squad for the euros. Chilwell is the first choice left back, there is shaw and rose neither of whom are playing well. I think it is too early and it is better for him not to be thrust in to that spotlight just yet.

Makes are rumoured pursuit of Kurazawa from PSG all the more strange. In terms of building a squad for next year I would still want 2 left backs and have Saka available in emergencies or cup games because he deserves games in his natural left wing position.

The formation Arteta is playing suits him at left back though, Martinelli to take defenders inside, Xhaka behind for cover. It works

Most of them generally slipping under the radar given our poor season. The press only really latched on to Martinelli after his goal against Chelsea, his 10th of the season. Right now no-one outside Arsenal is talking about Saka and as much as you want him to get the plaudits it is much better this way.

We really need to resurrect the Mari deal, we’re running short on CB at the moment. The commentator last might said Arsenal CB seem to rotate injury problems, it certainly feels like that.
Depending how long Mustafi is out for we’re down to 2 and a half as Holding works his way back from injury.

Hi g7,

There was definitely a youthful exhuberance to our play last night.

Saka has wonderful attributes going forward and is learning the defensive side very quickly. He's a very intelligent kid who seems to absorb information quickly and implement it in his game.

Willock has that ability to make long lungbursting runs with and without the ball. If Arteta can fine tune the other more rough edges to his game he could become quite the player.

Guendouzi played with a swagger although I'm not sure that always being the pantomime villain is necessarily a good thing.

Bellerin has done ok since his return but I think AMN is a little unlucky to find himself out of the side.

Martinelli didn't have his best match last night but it seems in every appearance you see another facet to his game, that deft little flick pass with the outside of his foot, the backheel and the 30 yard crossfield pass he hit for example. He seems to be able to do so much, scores all sorts of goals, has superb movement and an amazing work ethic to go with it.

Having said that I miss the little worm , some of his verbal stouches have been highly entertaining .

Pushed I'd probably go retro .... Pires

I agree Rich. I think it’s good that Saka is largely falling under the radar. I also hope he doesn’t get into the England set up before the Euro thingy coming up. I doubt he will either. From the days when I recall genuinely great players like Simpson and Armstrong never winning a cap it now seems they’re handed out like confetti to Barnet Sunday League players who managed to string three simple ten yard sideways passes direct to a teammate in a row.

I don’t think Saka has yet done enough to make an international breakthrough. He still has so much to do. Hence I’m happy for him to remain unnoticed outside Arsenal fans seeing him as highly promising.

Possibly but I think southgate needs to cap him sooner rather than later, the lad has Nigerian heritage and despite being born in England that won't put off Nigeria going after him like Iwobi if he gets ignored initially.

He's the perfect foil for Martinelli who wants to cut inside and try to score allowing Saka to overlap with seemingly unlimited energy. Its our strongest left flank combination currently out of the players we have available.

Saka was at a South London school and a few weeks ago, I met his former PE teacher. He spoke in the most glowing terms about Saka - had nothing but praise for him as a student and as a lad. He said he was as pleasant and genuine a lad as anyone in the school had ever taught and he was extremely popular with his peer group. Apparently he visits the school regularly and keeps in regular touch with teachers and old schoolmates alike.

If he doesn’t in the next 12 months he doesn’t deserve his job.

Every major top European club must be looking at Martinelli right now. It’s staggering to think he’s only 18, he hasn’t even finished growing yet.
