Reaching the QF has earned us another €10.6m in prize money irrespective of what happens in the QF. Another full house at the emirates as well bringing more money in.

City would be a disaster. It would be the perfect draw for Liverpool. I don't think Barca are particularly good and it would be nice to give them some payback.

Agreed. Barca for me. We're in the last 8 so we should be confident of beating anyone. Watching City against Liverpool we could well beat them. If this team play to their optimum we have a chance to beat any of the remaining 7 other teams.

Barca, dortmund or PSG would probably be best.

Conceicao accused Arteta of insulting him, which is why he didn’t shake his hand at full time.
By pure coincidence Conceicao also accused Pep of insulting him when City knocked Porto out in 2020…..and accused Tuchel of insulting him when Chelsea knocked them out in 2021….just a coincidence though so hardly relevant :42laughter:

Poor blokes having a run of bad luck. A bit like their run of losses in penalty shootouts.

Barca - would like this, some star names and a mix of youth and experience. I think they are beatable and definitely don’t know how to sit in, defend and frustrate
Bayern - better than Barca but an up and down season. Like Barca we owe them one. Kane coming to the emirates.
Man City - we’ll likely have to beat them to win the CL but they’d be decent favourites in a knock out format. Would rather avoid them and City draw Real Madrid
Real Madrid - a glamour tie, they have top class players everywhere, would prefer not to get them just yet!
PSG - feel we could beat them, look what Newcastle did to them in the group stage. As with most of the teams at this stage they’ll have the CL knock out experience over us
Athletico/Inter - tie in the balance. Athletico would be another Porto. Fast paced prem football has recently suited playing against Italian teams but Inter are very very good, they would be tough.
Dortmund/PSV - tie in the balance and if we drew the winners it would be the one tie we’d be made very clear favourites for

Tactically last night Porto pressed us high but not in a suffocating all team high press. It was enough for us to have to rush our passing from the back and the longer balls and winning second balls wasn’t as effective. What we also missed last night was the inverted full back. It felt to me very much like a flat back 4 which didn’t help us progress the ball in to midfield and it also meant Jorginho slightly suffered trying to hold the base of midfield on his own without as much time or space when he received it. Porto had a plan and executed it very well.

Part of me admires Porto’s wily, experienced play but a much bigger part of me will say a big F off to them. You kicked, snarled, play acted, time wasted, played the ref t he ligh every minute and then their manager threw their toys out of his pram at the end.

When you beat teams like this it makes it sweeter

I don’t admire anything about that bag of wanks and trying to cheat their way to the finals for 200+ minutes was nothing to be admired. The light tap to the face with the ball before collapsing like he’d just take a hit from Mike Tyson was just pathetic. Good riddance and the sooner that horrible brand of shite anti-football is removed the better.

It took Pep 7 years to win the CL with city, it took him 4 years to get past the QF. Even with all his experience in the competition it took him time to bring his team on to be experienced enough and good enough to win it.

I think Raya got the MOTM officially which no doubt he deserves as the match winner….but for me the player who really stood up to be counted tonight was Ødegaard. He was top class, driving the team on, I’d be amazed if he didn’t cover the most ground of any player - then wins both flops of the coin to get the shootout at our end and to go first - then sticks the first pen away. A true captains performance

Ditto that
Ødegaard was fully focused for his role, a top leader

I’d expect the same from Barca and the rest of the competition now they’ve senna how it disrupts our play. Especially with the piss weak UEFA refs.

Maybe even in the PL too but not sure how often the ref will stop play for a player getting cramp.

That atmosphere during the shoot-out was like nothing I've ever encountered at an Arsenal match - or at any match that I've attended anywhere.

I wasn't in amongst it but from where I sit in 112, the North Bank was a sea of aggressive loud and threatening hate. Screaming abuse, cacophony of booing and flashing torches.

And it worked.

With the exception of the other English sides, the next round works in our tactical favor. These are largely clubs that play open football by and large, with an exception or two.

I'd like to avoid the other English sides obviously. But if we do get either, then so be it. Some pundits I feel are grossly overstating our potential to win the thing. If we make it to the semis its a huge achievement. Pretty much no matter who we face. I'd love to get the winner of the Dortmund v PSV game. Either are the only clubs I'd be disappointed if we don't progress. I'm going throw Inter with the other mega clubs to avoid. They have only lost one league game all season. I have a strange feeling we'll get PSG.

That was torture last night.
The more it wore on towards the end the more unsettled and uncomfortable i became.
i really thought they would do us on penalties with their keeper being the hero but luckily turned out to be ours!!!
SO SO RELIEVED.
Great penalties for us as well.
Tastes even sweeter because their manager was a total C***!!

For me anything from now is a bonus because the least we needed to do was the quarters and we have achieved that.
Still want to avoid City though!

Hi Andy - yes, recalling Mee's general nervousness about The Gunners prospects at any time, (like me he was shaped by our drought years of mid 50s and 60s), we can easily imagine his thoughts if he had to watch that extra time and penalties! Surely though, he would have loved Ødegaard? An artist with a work ethic. B would also have rated Martin, but obviously not as highly as Steve Williams...

Hello Andy,

Arsenal have a friendly against Liverpool in Philly on July 31st. I cousin in Norristown (you familiar?) I converted to a Gooner, many years back, went to the Brentford game. Had a wonderful time. Bought the ticket off some site and said he thought it was going to be 50/50 if it was legit. lol

Hi DHD - I have been keeping a low profile because if I show too much interest in the fortunes of our great club, it is a given the rot will set in. Forget Arteta, his coaching team, the quality of our players or the opposition, for in the end it has nothing to do with them, but all with me. If I hide behind the sofa (actual and virtual), and pretend not to be looking, perhaps good things will happen. It seems to be working so far, though worryingly not for The Darts, who are relegation bound.

Yes it's all been a bit 'pinch me' since Christmas. Last night was quite special. It was a horrible game but that sort of team have been turning us over for years. They nearly did it again last night by stifling and suffocating our play but for once we didn't fold, we didn't react and we weren't intimidated. On the contrary, the crowd saw to it that if anyone was cowed, it was Porto. I really don't think they expected that intensity - and we fed off it.

Ødegaard was a shining light with his energy and endeavour. It wasn't easy for him against a very well organised midfield but he never dropped his head. He certainly led from the front.

I'm also becoming increasingly impressed with Havertz. He didn't have a great game last night - wasn't allowed to - but he put himself about and didn't hold back on challenges despite the jeopardy of an unpredictable Ref. Shouldn't admit to this but I particularly loved his shove on Conceicao who looked utterly bemused at this grievous insult to him, his family, his ancestors and his club. Hee hee....

Rice was a yellow card away from a suspension for the first leg of the QF. Rice and Havertz both remain a yellow card in either leg of the QF from missing the next game.
Jorginho, White, Kiwior, Saliba, Zinchenko, and Jesus would have to get booked in both legs of the QF (and we progress) to miss the semi

All yellows are wiped after the QF so only red cards would carry a suspension after this point

There’s one guy in that photo who isn’t reacting, because he’s taking the next penalty….

Not a bad assessment Rich. Wouldn't mind PSG or Barca. Bayern, just to kick a smug Kane to the kerb. City just to show off they could be beaten.

Tomiyasu deal all but signed as well, and the best unkept secret is we’ll use the option to make Raya’s deal permanent this summer.

This summer will really be as much about the outgoings as those coming in. There are 5-6 first team squad players who will likely leave

Inter had won 13 games in a row, Atletico are having a poor season by their standards, just shows how hard CL knock out games are. Games can be decided by a small moment or a bit of luck.
The last 8 is now a who’s who of heavyweight European teams.

Ball was in play for less than 50% of the time played in the Porto game, yet only 1 minute of added time in the first half and 3 minutes in the second were added. None in extra time.

Weirdly we had a first leg ref where everything was a foul and a second leg ref who let so much go but both still managed to help create a stop start game that Porto craved

Showing that referees "letting things go" does not always create a free-flowing game. He wasn't playing advantage. He was allowing Porto players to get away with time-wasting and small niggly fouls, particularly pushing our players off the ball from all angles.
