Absolutely. Perhaps (hopefully) the position Havertz will find himself in a season’s time.

Extremely disappointed. Lax defending against 10 men.
It was Saka who didnt follow his man. Both goals were due to him, unfortunately.

Enough of the experimental stuff. We got away with it in the first two games and have been punished now. It’s arrogant to think you can totally change up the successful relationships in the team and immediately create new ones.

Get back to what worked last season. Arteta wants that extra midfielder when he thinks we’ll dominate games, we should be more than good enough to win these games with a conventional back 4.

I worry now that Havertz will be Arteta’s stubborn player, he’ll keep picking him to try to prove himself right for signing him but he should have been eased in gradually as he’s playing a new position.

So that’s what 200 million gets you. The remaining factor from last season is a manager who does not want us to take chances after we lead.

Although we are stronger on paper, we are closer to the Arsenal of the 2nd half of last season rather than the 1st half. I don't see where we are 'better'. 2 relatively easy games as PL games go and we have struggled more than we should in either.

Post subject:  Re: Supporters Forum

Surely also it’s short sighted to have to change the entire system and put square pegs in round holes when one player (Zinchenko) is out. Maybe that’s why timber was bought but we should be able to beat Fulham in a bog standard 4-3-3 as long as the players stop making these stupid mistakes.

2 shots on target for Fulham 2 goals. It seems to have been some time since our opponents had to actually work hard and buildup pressure on us to score a goal. When was the last time you felt ‘that goal was coming’ from the opposition?

Arteta in the first 3 games this season has almost made an entire new team, only Ødegaard, Saka and Martinelli are the same consistent starters in the same positions.
White has moved to CB, Saliba to left CB, Partey to RB, Havertz/rice in to replace Xhaka, all sorts in to replace zinny, and no Jesus. It’s actually quite a different team to the start of last season due to injury and Arteta’s experimenting

Yup. Midfield dominance at the expense of defensive frailty and a lack of cutting edge up front.

Then the completely separate issue is just not putting the boot in when we are on top. Fulham were shattered and down to 10 men and toothless ... and we contrive to concede.

The worry with Gabriel is if Arteta is claiming it’s a tactical decision then it might have been sensible to actually try these tactics in pre season. Players look uncomfortable in it

It’s a regular occurrence for us no matter the state of the game. Relentless pressure then we take the lead and completely hand the initiative back. Of course I understand the opponents mind set changes but when have we scored on the counter when a team has to open up? We go in to our shell defending a lead

There must be something going on with Gabriel that we're not being told about.
It just doesn't add up.

Got to agree with Rich. The mentality has to change. 2-1 up we should be going for a third not sitting back. Also Arteta needs to stop trying to clever aleck and a tinkerman. Stick with what works. havertz needs a confidence boost big time. I thought Vieira played well but Havertz will start against manure. The thing going for us in the upcoming match is Manure have been really crap so far. Knowing our luck this Hojland chap will make his debut and get a hat trick.

The Guardian not pulling their punches:

"Fulham still made the better chances for long periods, largely because they were up against such a confused looking defensive shape, and in Partey a full-back so positionally vague you half excepted to look down and notice he’s leafing through the manual on the go, wondering why the whole thing is in Swedish"

"Too often the ball ended up in the space Arsenal have deliberately vacated, that space being the one close to goal in between the line of the posts, historically quite a key area in the scoring of goals."

"Kai Havertz, who occupied a Kai Havertz shaped vacuum in this game, was replaced by Fábio Vieira."

"Again it was fine work from Vieira, entirely comfortable on that side, and given time to measure the perfect low cross into the path of Nketiah, who slid the ball past Bernd Leno. It felt like a vital goal not just in the context of the game, but for the basic notion of the central striker in this team, the direct route to goal. Why the high-difficulty prelude, the attempts to win with one leg tied behind the other?"

Post subject:  Re: Supporters Forum

Vieira gave a little glimpse today of the player he could become. A bit of David Silva and Bernardo Silva.

Silky left foot and effortless ballstriking ability.

Still gets pushed around a bit too much but the technical ability is obvious.

I understand the need to experiment a bit given the obvious need for rotation this season but, like Guardiola occasionally, Arteta does seem to overthink and overcomplicate things sometimes.

No idea whats going on with Gabriel.

Breaking up arguably the best CB pairing in the league last season in order to play Partey at RB and shoehorn Havertz into the side seems nonsensical. Particularly given Gabriel's pace and physical prowess in a high line.

Are we actually considering selling him?

Post subject:  Re: Supporters Forum

We are now going into the United game where presumably Arteta will revert to a back four with Gabriel alongside Saliba..........or will he?

Our back four is now a little unsettled to say the least.

I can't see how he can persist with this Partey RB experiment in such a big game.

Will he drop Havertz or stubbornly continue with this apparently failing experiment.

Hi Soc
Surely with Zinchenko now fit he has to revert to.the back 4 that was so.good for much of the season.
Dump this experiment with Partey at right back and play
Raya
White saliba Gabriel zinchenko
Partey Ødegaard Rice
Martinelli Eddie/Jesus Saka
Think ramsdale should do better with both goals especially the first. Seems so leaden footed sometimes. Been impressed with Eddie and deserves to keep his place.
Drop Havertz to the bench.
However this is Arteta we are talking about......

Post subject:  Re: Supporters Forum

As good as zinchenko is he needs to stop this 'showy' mode where he gets carried away with himself and ultimately loses the ball which leads eventually to.their corner.
Not the first time his error has cost us a goal
