The ref has let stuff go for both teams, I’m not saying he’s been biased, just that that style of reffing is not suiting us in this game. That style of reffing WOULD have suited us in the Man U game as we were the aggressive and high press, high energy team

Yes, good points well made

Arteta has work to do but I'm confident he will get the best out of this team, because the players know they will be moved on in the near future if they don't make the effort.

Come on Arsenal!

This is a rod he made for himself. Let’s see if he collapses as a manager after 4 games.

Yes much better. Let's see how long we can keep it up.

Xhaka 3rd foul and no yellow. To be fair he slipped on that one but backs up my thought that the ref is being lenient and letting things go

Didn’t say the ref is to blame. Said his style is letting lots go which favours the higher tempo, higher press and often better team. When you’re playing badly and struggling to deal with the tight marking and aggression a fussy ref is what you want.
We haven’t got close enough to Leeds to complain about fouls given against us as we’ve barely made a tackle

Well if ...... "we haven't got close enough to Leeds to complain about fouls given against us " why on earth are you moaning about the ref .
Now you want a fussy ref . :8angers: :laughing7: I give up .

All about Pépé. He’s so strong on the ball, always with the ball to feet and a half turn or spin, he hardly ever loses it.
He rolls his man and sets away Lacazette, back to Pépé scuffed to Nelson and scuffed in.
Tip: don’t get tight to Pépé

Apart from Aubameyang he should be first on the team sheet.

Anything good we seem to do seems to start from him

I was talking about the times Leeds got very tight to us where a more fussy ref would give a foul and let us relieve the pressure. It isn’t that difficult to understand surely? A high press team want a lenient ref. When we become high press teams we want lenient refs
People can mention the ref and his style without it being some ridiculous rant blaming him when we’ve clearly been outplayed.

You wonder - they can fight and scrap so effectively at the start of the second half, what the hell were they playing at in the first half?

Edit - another Xhaka foul, still no yellow. Perhaps he's got some compromising photos of the ref.

Comms going mad that Xhaka hasn’t got a yellow, 4 fouls, and amazed that Klich got the first yellow card.....klich 5 fouls.
I’m not saying Xhaka doesn’t deserve one - he does - but it shows how I think commentators can have their narrative in their head and ignore the facts.

Holding gives it away again, Kolasinac gets a yellow as a result and we concede a dangerous free kick.

Lacazette can count himself a bit lucky not to have been sent off there.

Phew. That was a relief. VAR review on Lacazette. Could have been viewed differently. And he’s playing so well this half.

Arsenal have missed two free headers from corners today as well. Luiz and Sokratis really should have scored.

But some great corner deliveries from Pépé. Good weapon to have after years of hitting the first man

How many more times is Holding going to make a sloppy failed pass?

Lacazette deserves that man of the match- he's been tremendous in the second half.
Bad as the first half was, great to see a reaction like that since the break :53big-emoticons:

Enjoyed the fight and energy in the second half. Noticeably played much higher and more positive.
Another hurdle cleared for Arsenal.....but we were lucky today because a lot of teams would have been 2/3 up at half time.

Much better second half obviously.

Just goes to show the value of sheer effort and intensity.

Xhaka should have had 4 yellows at least :laughing7: He really has to go. Those cynical fouls and stupid tackles he makes are just so brainless.

Guendouzi seemed to increase his intensity ten fold at the flick of a switch but he needs to play like that all the time.

Definitely need a CB in Jan. Holding looks off the pace.

Nelson was lively, as was Martinelli.

Lacazette outstanding second half.

Make no mistake, though, Leeds could have been out of sight at half time.

Did Arsenal turn up and expect to win? I think it’s too easy to say we underestimated Leeds, I think they surprised us but I don’t think we disrespected them or underestimated them. I’m pretty sure Arteta didn’t set them out like that. I think it was a case of Arsenal having given a lot in the last 2 games and probably ‘hoping’ they could win it at 75% plus Leeds being very very good in that first half

Holding was shocking and looked off the pace but *%^@ me the options he had in front of him making themselves available when he was trying to distribute it were sparse. Xhaka had his typical nightmare and I think Guendouzi might have got a bollocking at half time for his first half performance as his 2nd was way better.

Through to the 4th round, much better second half but I feel that Arteta won’t be smiling on the training pitch tomorrow. I think and hope he’ll still be really angry with the way we started the game. This is the level we need, it’s not good enough just winning if we didn’t follow instructions and we’re lucky not to be losing. The Man U game was the benchmark for 60 mins, improved fitness can take that to 90 mins. That match tonight was a long way short of the Man U game

The dirties were very very good in the first half. Easy to see why they're going to come up. A well drilled team where everyone knows what everyone else is going to do. They flattened our midfield axis and played round it. Someone in the pub said it looked like a team with two years against a team with two weeks and that made sense to me.

Second half Gwen and Xhaka seemed to play at an angle rather than flat. Suddenly there was space everywhere and the game seemed completely different as we were getting the ball through the middle and around Özil. After the goal (so happy for Nelson and whilst I'd have been happy to bang in many more a winner in a 1-0 can only be good for a kid who is at that stage where talent must translate) they were broken. A bit of zest went out of their game and whilst 1-0 is always dodgy in a cup tie it never got to be a frightening 1-0.

But the reason I'm going to download the game to watch again is for Papa in the corner. You can put Papa in the corner, but if you put him there you can't have the bloody ball!

(feel free to delete Rog, not sure what the rules are) if you google total sportek arsenal there's a site with ways to do something you may want to do whilst a match is on.

Holy moly. That’s a bit savage.

Look at this way. Arteta said if players don’t perform they are not going to be part of the plans for the future. If he is to be true to his word then he looks at Xhaka in the first half and sees no fight or endeavour. He must go. If he starts going well I eventually got him interested in the game- then that is not enough. For the last year we have been playing one half of football & everyone waiting for someone else to impose themselves on the game. That’s why we tumble down the table. It is just not Emery because under Wenger people would put up with Theo not turning up. It is part of the ongoing poor culture at the club.

Arteta set the standard he wants- they fell short. What is he going to do about it? Yep, harsh. But that’s what u get paid to do.

Or do you say. We give him 2 chances or 3. Every game they should come out to give 100%. The malaise at this club needs to end. I was hoping Arteta would be the person to correct it. The jury is out for me on this issue.

I was really surprised at how good Leeds were. Took a look at the Championship table and no surprise to see they are top of the table. They will slide easily into the PL. They should have scored at least 3 or 4 times in the first half. They will feel they deserved something out of the match. Whatever Mikel said to the squad at halftime worked. The one thing I am seeing with him is his half time adjustments. Be it the talk or tactics, we looked good in the 2nd half.

Holding had a bad game but I still hold out hope he will improve with games under his belt. When we get Tierney and Bellerin back along with a transfer or two at CB we will be stronger defensively. Hopefully we will get some transfers like the Juve defender or others of some quality.

The pundits in the game I was watching were clearly for Leeds. The referee seemed to be as well. Even so, Leeds is a great story if/when they make it back to the PL. Phoenix from the ashes. Took a couple decades but they did it by grit and starting over with literally nothing. They were hated before by most fans. Maybe they still are but you have to admire them in their present incarnation.
