Watched it now. I thought he was charming and good-humoured right up until Amy's question and then the mask slipped a bit. He then realised that and tried to pull it back. He clearly does feel anger towards the fans though and sees their entirely legitimate desire to manifest their discontent as spoiling the "unity" of the club. The problem is that part of that unity involved him signing a new two-year contract only last year and there is no doubt he would have gone on doing that if allowed to do so. Politicians always demand unity - it most often means stop questioning my leadership, shut up and get in line.

I dare you to watch the interview on arsenal.com and not crack a smile when he says “You don’t spend 22 years of your life every single day with maximum energy for a cause and you walk away blowing a whistle, you know”. Classic Wengerism if I ever saw one.

Yes

His warped priorities were never more evident than in the autumn of 2009, when he announced: “I have been criticised for not signing Xabi Alonso or Gareth Barry. But if I signed them, I would have killed Alex Song, Abou Diaby and Denilson.”

For the life of me I can't see how .... another year of Wenger would have seen Arsenal's reputation for fast flowing football well and truly buried .

What a few thousand fans did wouldn't matter one iota .

Does any newbie fan worry about reputation .... of course not ...it's all about winning first ; attractive football second and we weren't doing much of either .

Yes all in all Wenger refusing to be drawn on the topic was a masterclass in self-control and avoided this kind of nonsense.

It's all very John Cross isn't it?

Stupid ungrateful fans failing to get energised by a performance that revealed all the traits of a late-Wenger game. Loads of crap, some nice moments when it didn't matter much...but he deserves better because broccoli.

The Castratos, more like it.

I know that you think its funny to keep putting the boot in, but its really ridiculous to criticitise Wenger for that answer to that question.

Weirdest thing about that quote from 2009 is the mention of Gareth Barry. Xabi Alonso was world class and if there was a chance to sign him we should’ve jumped on it. But Song in his prime was twice the player Barry was. If his name was Gael rather than Gareth he wouldn’t have played more than three years in the premier league. Shockingly average player.

There is no problem. The spleen venters are always with us ratcheting up the ZZZs. They almost have the Gleiber field to themselves. Temperatures seem to rise with those of us who prefer to keep our spleens unnvented.

I would criticise him for his answer to Amy though. She asked if he felt any relief it was entirely his choice to let his barely-concealed irritation at the disloyal fans and their scant regard for the kids in China bubble to the surface.

Maybe it was a warning that he was concerned about literally killing song if he signed players that good.

Watching it again, he actually expanded on it in the end and said he's not resentful, it has nothing to do with the fans, and that he can understand the fans were not happy and he has to accept that. Think some of those headlines make a leetle too much of his comments.

I have no idea what your Sopranos reference meant. I guessed that it signified that you were agreeing with Top Gun's ridiculous point. In any case you have to admit that it is the sort of answer that is very open to interpretation.

Yes I suppose so which is why it might be best not to go in studs up in response.

Actually I was referring to the "don't talk about Wenger" issue that had been referred to in several of my previous utterly hilarious posts ("I know that you think it's funny" is SUCH a schoolteacherly thing to say!). Although I still think the beagle getting the internet through its tail IS very funny and that's a hill I am prepared to die on unlike Wenger about whom I don't care quite as much as I obviously should given that he invented decency etc.
